Rising Costs and Bad Film Choices Keep Us Away from the Movies
Movie attendance and ticket sales are at a 16-year low for 2020. I haven't gone as often as I used to due to the rising costs and lackluster choices. If theaters want to draw back business, perhaps they should make a trip to the movies more affordable.
COMMENTARY | The results are in: Movie attendance and ticket sales for 2020 have dipped to a 16-year low, dropping 3 percent since last year. Was the decrease due to the lackluster movies released in 2020, or was it due to the still-struggling economy? Either way, the fact is that people aren't visiting the movie theaters as often they used to.
My hubby and I used to go to the movies every weekend when we were younger because it was the only date venue we could afford. Ticket prices were only about $7, so a night at the movies was a pretty cheap date for us. Since then, I have seen the prices jump to around $10 a ticket, and movie snacks have become nearly unaffordable.
We have easily spent 50 bucks on a single movie trip. To help cut back on the costs, we've resorted to attending matinee showings. If we can't find a babysitter that time of day, we simply go to dinner since it's more economical than the movies nowadays.
It hasn't just been the increased ticket and concession prices that limited our visits to the movies in 2020. Even when we planned to go, we quickly changed our minds after getting a peek at the box office list. There have been very few movies this year that drew our interest. We saw just "Sherlock Holmes", "Harry Potter", "Captain America", "Moneyball" and the newest "Twilight." This is a mere fraction of the number of films we have seen in years past. We waited for the Blu-ray releases for films that didn't deserve a trip to the theater.
If theaters want to draw back my business and the business of millions of others, they should reconsider their business plan. I could deal with the high ticket prices, but the fact that a soda and a tub of popcorn cost nearly 15 bucks is not drawing my business there any faster. Even if concession prices were lowered slightly, theaters could make the money back by the increased number of customer visits. If not, well, I guess that means more Netflix and Redbox for this movie fan.
