Wearing Bikini Swimming Suits Over Sixty Years Old

We are used to seeing pretty much everything on the sandy beaches and around sunny swimming pools. Minuscule two piece bathing suits and bikinis leave very little to the imagination. Bikinis have been around for over 60 years.

We are used to seeing pretty much everything on the sandy beaches and around sunny swimming pools. Minuscule two piece bathing suits and bikinis leave very little to the imagination.

Bikini fashion isn't confined just to the beach. Britney Spears wore a black sequined bikini for her MTV performance, garnering criticism for wearing a revealing outfit that was not flattering to the mother of two.

Swimming Suits Over the Past Century

Beach bathing suit fashion has changed dramatically over the past century. At the beginning of the twentieth century bathing suits were very modest. The suits covered nearly the entire body. Rather than tight fitting spandex, the bathing suits fit loosely and had skirts and sleeves. Bathing suits at the turn of the century consisted of 8 yards of fabric and weighted 20 pounds when wet.

Loose fitting swimming outfits were gradually replaced by one piece swimming suits in the 1920's and 1930's. The 1930's saw the popularity of teh "bathing beauties," such as Dorothy Lamour and Esther Williams.

Two Piece Swim Suits During World War II

During the World War II years there was a shortage of material. It was during the war years that the midriff started to get cut out of the swimming suit. The two piece swimming suits of the war years were a result of the material shortage. You might call two piece swimsuits of this era patriotic.

Bikini Fashion in 1946

The modern bikini was brought to life in 1946, after the war ended. Reard is credited with the invention of the bikini, although Invented is not an accurate description, because there been pictures of women wearing outfits that looked like bikinis during the Grecian era, two thousand years ago.

Two different men designed the bikini in 1946. Louis Reard and Jacques Heim. Heim designed his bikini six months before Reard, but Read's showmanship surpassed Heim. The 1946 version of the bikini was patented by Louis Reard. He named the bikini after the atomic bomb tests on the Bikini Atoll in the Pacific.

The skimpy two piece bikini was controversial. When the bikini was introduced at the Paris Fashion Show, none of the top models would wear the reveling swimming outfit on the runway. Reard eventually hired a nude dancer from the Casino de Paris. Micheline Bernardini was the dancer who modeled the first bikini.

Bikinis made the news, as the skimpy outfit attracted attention and controversy.

Movies Gave Bikini Fashion a Boost

It took a few years for the bikini to gain respectability. The bikini revolution was helped along by actress Brigitte Bardot, who created a sensation when she wore a bikini in the 1958 movie, "And God Created Woman."

The bikini even got its own anthem "Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini," sung by Brian Hyland in 1960. The song triggered a bikini buying spree.

Beach movies of the early 1960's, starring Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon, did their part to promote the popularity of the skimpy bikini. Memorable titles were "Beach Blanket Bingo" and "How to Stuff a Wild Bikini."

Elvis Presley made a series of popular beach movies in Hawaii. Starlets in the Elvis Presley beach movies wore one piece swimming suits and bikinis

The Bikini: Sixty Years Old and Still Going Strong

Now the bikini does not seem so controversial. Bikinis are even considered mainstream. Over the years there have been introductions of even skimpier swimming fashions, such as topless, mono-kini and thong bikini's.

Women choose bathing suits that are functional, fashionable and comfortable. Whether or not a bikini is the right choice for you is a personal decision. Generations of women have worn the feminine swim wear since it came out over 60 years ago. The bikini is still going strong.
