Advanced Workouts for Master Swimmers (Condor for Swimmers Book 4)
Championship Swim Training
- Part I, Technique Drills and Sets, deals with training zones and benchmark sets so critical to effective training and goal setting. Also included is a series of drill progressions and checklists that can be applied to each stroke and the individual medley. These progressions will help pinpoint stroke deficiencies and improve stroke technique as well as sculling, starts, turns, finishes, and kick and pull training. The checklists give swimmers and coaches tips for training and competition.
- Part II, Workouts and Programs, is full of information for coaches to plan the long-term development of juniors through masters swimmers. Sample training sets are provided and can be customized to suit the level of that swimmer or squad. Part II also covers the critical tapering phase to get swimmers ready for competition and provides detailed racing strategies. Dryland conditioning suggestions help swimmers train all year round, whether in or out of the water. And no world-class coaching book would be complete without a chapter on how to completely and objectively evaluate your training program.

Iron Gym Workout Bar
A positive review of the Iron Gym Workout Bar.
I'm a pretty meat and potatoes workout kind of guy. I mostly stick to push-ups and sit-ups, and occasionally run or do free weights in the garage. Sometimes, I might do nothing more than high reps of push-ups and sit-ups, so an average workout is a few hundred of each. However, pull-ups were a problem. I wanted to make the addition and work the extra arm muscles. But just where exactly do I find a random pole at the right height? Heading out to a kid's playground to borrow the monkey bars was out of the question, so I got an Iron Gym. It really does hook onto a door frame, and although there is a safety tab you are supposed to permanently install onto the door frame, I skipped that and haven't had it fall on me after several dozen workouts. The grip is extremely sturdy.
The Iron Gym is multi-functional for other workouts. While I do sit-ups, I rarely have a partner to hold my feet. The Iron Gym snugly holds in a doorway and makes sit-ups much more challenging and technically correct, to where it is easier to do them right and feel the burn and less temptation to go with rocking your shoulders up and back. If you're someone that does high reps as I do, this will be a major asset.
Also, doing a push-up with the Iron Gym is a different experience than just doing a normal one. The grip feels different from just hands to the floor. Although I prefer the normal push-up, I have a lot of friends that prefer the bar to decrease strain. There is enough padding so that you can do shoulder-width and double shoulder-width push-ups, and the same goes for pull-ups.
Lastly, the Iron Gym is great for travel. For someone on the go, it is easy to pack it in a trunk or backseat, and sets up with minimal effort in most hotel rooms and houses. For most cases, you wouldn't even need to take it apart in the slightest, which for me, was a very big plus.
Most important of all, I have permanently improved my workout routine both in sit-ups and introducing pull-ups for a scrawny $25 investment. For the guy or girl that sticks with the basic workout, the Iron Gym is a very useful and reliable tool.
