Going AWOL on eBay

What happens when you don't know what you're doing at Ebay? You find you're swimming with sharks, that's what.

I decided to be generous and fair, so instead of raising the bid to $21, I typed in $60. That way, I can live with myself knowing I didn't take advantage of anyone. It's the Christian thing to do. (Only, I'm not Christian.)

It was a very impulsive move, one of many rash decisions made under the influence of a red ticket or coupon. These things are triggered by momentary loss of intelligence. The idea of getting something off price leaves me weak at the knees. It is only when the blood rushes back to resuscitate my brain that logic kicks in. Where the heck will I put it? It's blue!?

But when it comes to Ebay, there is no customer service counter where the mournful can come to repent. No one to wave a valid receipt to, no one to butter up with a "you must be so tired by now... what with all the complaints you have to put up with..."

To make matters worse, I don't even know how stupid Ebay works. How do you change your mind about an offer? What if you change your mind, say, five minutes after you click "bid"? What if you suddenly realize that the scam-artist selling the carpet wants to charge $100 for shipping! And what if that tidbit of information was there the whole time but was wisely concealed in the fine print on the very bottom of the page?

With no one to turn to, I decided to wait things out and hope someone else puts in a bid for more money. To ensure my odds I stayed clear of Ebay for a week and temporarily locked away my logic gene.

It turned out that there was no one out there in Ebay land that was dumber than me. Oh joy.

My next maneuver was the famous "see-and-avoid" tactic they teach you at pilot school when you go for the $49.95 introductory lesson, flying a single engine piper. I kept spotting the jolly emails congratulating me about my winning bid. As per the tactic, I promptly avoided them.

When the emails turned from merry to stern I continued to ignore them. But with feeling.

Eventually the notifications turned to threats. I decided to turn to diplomacy. I mean what beats the truth? I was sure if I wrote a letter to the seller with a heartfelt explanation of the circumstances he or she would be touched by my honesty and immediately let me off the hook. It would be the Christian thing to do.

So I wrote. But it sounded a little stupid so I added a few white lies to illicit some well-deserved sympathy. Granted, saying I had emergency surgery was pushing it but it wasn't a complete lie. I did have emergency surgery last year, and it was really awful, not to mention debilitating. There was no way I could have dealt with the purchase of a Persian rug back then.

The email was very polite and sincere. I mailed it with a positive attitude and was well assured it would be received the same way, and dealt with in good faith.

And so it was. I received a note informing me that it was too bad I had surgery but I was still responsible for the bid. Furthermore, if I didn't settle the matter I would be subject to negative feedback (ooo scary) (not).

I don't know how someone else would have responded to that, but I didn't care for the tone in that note. I found it very cold and uncaring and immediately dispatched a response with words to that effect.

A new offer came back-I could pay a cancellation fee of $45 to settle the matter. I would get no carpet, blue or otherwise, and still have to contend with negative feedback for my bad behavior. Interesting.

So this is what I did: I dropped this whole Ebay thing. Since I only had one transaction in my history it won't make a difference in my life. True, the other transaction rendered positive feedback with a comment - a very complimentary one. But I can probably get praise elsewhere in my life. I could work really hard on a meatloaf tonight then just bask in the glow of praise until desert.

The only problem is, now I think twice before logging on to Ebay, and I log off very quickly. When I'm there I feel like I need to hide from the law, like I'm the Ebay bandit.

I feel like one of those people that sample candy-by-the-pound at Shoprite. They succumb to the impulse to sneak a chocolate covered pretzel, but for the rest of the time they are shopping they can feel those security cameras honing in on them. And they know for a fact that all the cashiers are talking!
