Rodney King Found Dead in Swimming Pool
Rodney King, the victim in the 1991 police brutality case that saw Los Angeles erupt in riot violence, was found dead in a swimming pool by his fiance.
Rescuers pulled him out and attempted CPR, but King didn't respond and was pronounced dead at a hospital. There were no initial signs of foul play and it being investigated as a drowning. King was 47.
King was made famous by infamy, when he was the victim of a brutal police beating that was caught on video in 1991. The trial of four police officers charged went on for months and deeply divided the city while forcing people to confront race issues.
When the jury acquitted three officers of all charges and were unable to come to a verdict on a single charge for one officer forcing a partial mistrial, the city erupted.
I lived in the Los Angeles area at the time and remember the period as one of turmoil and uncertainty. The entire affair was ugly, from almost every perspective. The actions of the police, the senseless violence and the widespread looting put Los Angeles in the worst spotlight. The City of Angels was imploding on live television.
April 29 was the 20th anniversary of the day the riots began. Truck driver Reginald Denny was dragged from his truck two decades ago and beaten nearly to death while a news helicopter recorded it from above.
King spoke about the riots with a Los Angeles TV station about the anniversary.
"It felt like Armageddon. It felt like the end of the world," King told KABC about hearing the verdict. "I was raised not to be violent, and not to be rioting and carrying on like a wild man," King added. "But at the same time, there was a side of me saying 'What else can you do?' I didn't agree with it, but I understood."
I was a person who found it hard to understand any of it and am hopeful Los Angeles can continue to make strides in healing itself and moving ahead as a more progressive city that thrives on its diversity instead of being torn apart by it.
