Conquering the Fear of Open Water Swimming
This is a simple article that will explain how to overcome the fear of swimming in open water environments from an English Channel Swimmer and San Francisco Swimming Coach.
Imagine waiting, waiting for the sound of the gunshot that sets you free, opens the gates to the beautiful pristine water, which will be overcome with swimmers each trying to stroke faster and stronger than the person next to them. Imagine the beauty of the fish, jellyfish, seals, sea otters, and hundreds of thousands of other species of animals swimming in the same beautiful water possibly right underneath you. The unusually feeling of being one with nature in an environment of competition is one of the most humbling yet rewarding things that I have ever experienced. The problem with this euphoric feeling is that gets masked by all familiar fear of the unknown.
All the time I get asked by triathletes for tips on getting over the fear of swimming in water that you can not see the bottom of and where its all too easy to imagine sharks and mysterious animals beneath you ready to pounce at any moment. My response to all these fears starts with this very idea of the unknown and it resonates through the endless possible dimensions of the mind. Here is how…
The first and most important step to kick down the obstacles between you and the water is the fear of drowning. For the most part, if you are reading this you are a decent triathlete who enjoys running and biking but your mentality on the swim is just get through it without dying. This is the fundamental problem with the fear of drowning because it is no different then being in a pool that is ten feet deep. Most people, when push comes to shove, you have the ability to float until help arrives, which generally in a sanctioned race, is a matter of seconds. This simple fact needs to be repeated over and over in your head before, during and after a race. When you mentally can conquer the fear of drowning by reassuring yourself help is only a few seconds away you are ready for the second step.
The second common fear that people have swimming in open water environments is the fear of mysterious animals beneath you ready to have a lunchtime snack. The simple fact is that more people die from dog attacks then shark attacks and even if a jellyfish were to sting you your bodies adrenaline will most likely make it so you do not even notice it until the end of the race. The animals beneath you are not there to harm you and this fact needs to be something that is ingrained in your head. The second step to conquering this fear is completely blocking any thought of animals out of your head. I like to think about stroke count and speed of swimming so much so that I forget about anything else. For example, the first time I swam from Alcatraz back to San Francisco, before the race, I was completely convinced that sharks were circling underneath me and at any moment I was about to die. Part way through the race I realized that if I concentrated on the beautiful scenery and think about passing every person I see in front of me I would completely forget about the whole animal crisis. I even swam through a school of close to fifty jellyfish and my mind was so concentrated on more important matters I just assumed they were plastic bags and it was not big deal. At the end of the race it scared me a little more but the simple fact is that animals are a part of nature and although you hear the occasional story of a shark attack or similar outcome stories the probability of that happening is significantly smaller than the probability you will get into a car accident driving home from the race. Swimmers who want to become comfortable in any water environment must accept nature and embrace the beauty of swimming in a natural environment alongside tons of different creatures. Once this happens the fear of the animals will become to be the best part about open water swimming.
Lastly, open water swimming is meant to be an adrenaline-pumping event where people are put out of their comfort zone. For this reason it is vital to accept some fear and use it to tap into the euphemism sitting in the depths of the unknown in open water swimming. Whether it be my English Channel Swim, Alcatraz Swims or just a simple lake swim I always feel nervous and slightly fearful however I have embraced these emotions and allowed my mind to use them to formulate the big picture, which is the most pure and natural beauty possible. My final advice is to take in everything you can while open water swimming and convince yourself that each small part, which on its own derives the fear you are feeling, and put it together building the beautiful image of what open water swimming really is. If you can do this you will have no problem the next time you jump off the boat or run in the jaw dropping magnificence that we refer to as open water.
