Amniotic Fluid
Amniotic fluid is the life-sustaining fluid that a baby floats in while it is in the womb. Here are the ups and downs of amniotic fluid.
Amniotic fluid is the liquid that a baby lives in while in the mothers womb. This fluid helps protect the baby from being harmed if the mother bumps something or pressure is placed on her stomach. It allows the baby and the umbilical cord to float freely and remain healthy. Floating in this liquid allows the baby to stay at a comfortable temperature at all times and allows him or her to move freely even before he or she has much muscle density.
While in your womb, the baby is able to eat, drink and breath the amniotic fluid in preparation for the world. Breathing the amniotic fluid helps the baby strengthen his or her lungs. Drinking the liquid helps mature the baby's intestines and excretory processes so they can properly void real waste after birth.
Amniotic fluid is present from the time the baby is conceived. But no one knows exactly what amniotic fluid is made up of. This is because the baby uses this fluid and helps break it down and recycle it. Basically, every time amniotic fluid is checked, it has a different chemical makeup.
Low Amniotic fluid
If you are leaking fluid, your doctor will request an ultrasound to determine how much fluid you have. Having too much amniotic fluid can be as bad as not having enough. This puts pressure on extremely weak membranes that are already stretched.
Excess amniotic fluid can mean a number of things as well. It could mean that there is a birth defect, the mother has RH factor, maternal diabetes, twins and a huge number of cases it is still unknown as to why this happens.
There are many risks that can be associated with having too much amniotic fluid. These risks include rupture of membranes, placenta problems, going into labor early, growth restriction, stillbirth, Cesarean deliver and postpartum hemorrhage.
