School Pools and Fields Not for Student Use: Administrative Fail
Schools have swimming pools and football fields they can't use . When money worries plague most U.S. school districts, these projects are eating up funds with little to show for it.
Pooling Resources
It should, therefore, come as a surprise that schools in South Florida are spending $8 million on two swimming pools that most students can't use. According to the Miami Herald, while they're great for competitive swimmers and divers, the pools aren't appropriate for anything else; they're 7-feet deep at the shallow end. That's a whole lot of money to spend on a swim team.
Despite the fact that neither pool will be used to teach children to swim, the county has received hundreds of thousands of dollars in funding between the School Board of Broward County and the state legislature for the Broward.org SWIM Central program, which helps promote pool safety and swim lessons.
With education cuts in the news all over the country, we should rethink those policies and procedures that make Poor Fiscal Sense. One could argue that the pools qualify in this regard.
Someone Dropped the Ball
Similarly, Herbert H. Lehman High School in New York City, built back in 1972, has never had a home game held on its football field because the school built it 20 yards too short. All the land surrounding the school has been sold and developed, and no one's been able to solve the problem. It's a waste of taxpayer money, and begs a solution.
Nearly $3 million have been earmarked for upgrades to the practice field ... which does not include its expansion. According to an article last fall in Talk Bronx, the school shells out an additional $1,800 a year to cover the additional costs of transportation to a properly-sized field. School administrators are trying to acquire two nearby lots that would potentially allow space for a full-field expansion.
It's hard to balance the needs of students and staff with the budgets provided by the school board and state. However, if we're going to hold teachers accountable for their classroom practices, and students receive grades based on their school performance, it's time we also brought some focus on projects that don't work for our schools or our students.
