Aqua Teen Hunger Force Season 1 on DVD

A review of Cartoon Network Adult Swim series Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Season One, on DVD, including an episode guide.

They rent a house from their next door neighbor Carl, whose Jersey accent and horrible attitude make their constant bickering hilarious. The premise of this show changes from week to week, but largely it involves the three mutants trying to live normal lives without having to do normal things, like work or have responsibility (despite Frylock's best efforts). For viewers of the more mature cartoon block Adult Swim on Cartoon Network, this is standard fare for the various series on the network; for the uninitiated, it can be both frightening and hysterical at the same time.

Episode Guide:

Rabbot: The Aqua Teen Hunger Force try to solve the case of Carl's destroyed car, but as would become typical in the series, the Force is nothing more than a farce. While Frylock discovers the cause of the accident is the Rabbot created by Dr. Weird (whose crazy actions become a mainstay as the introduction to the show), Master Shake worries about his new hairstyle and Meatwad acts like Meatwad and doesn't quite know what's going on.

Escape from Leprechaupolis: Carl tries to hit a get rich quick scheme that he found online by chasing down a rainbow, which is operated by leprechauns trying to get rich themselves. But their pursuit keeps bringing in people who don't have any money, making their booty seem more like a garage sale than a gold mine.

Bus of the Undead: When Master Shake tries to attract vampires with his strobe light hat, he ends up attracting a creation of Dr. Weird, a half man half moth that is attracted to the lights. The moth, with an unrequited taste for light, ends up tormenting the Force by sitting outside in a "Bus of the Undead," which Master Shake convinces Meatwad is full of vampires.

Mayhem of the Mooninites: The introduction of the Mooninites, Inignot and Ur, who essentially torment the Force and especially Carl, by looting their homes and putting graffiti all over the place. The Mooninites constantly talk about the greatness of the Moon and how the Earth should be a moon of the Moon (only the Moon wouldn't want to be disgraced by having something else called the moon).

Balloonenstein: Meatwad gains great powers when a balloon's static electricity strikes Meatwad. However, he is still very unintelligent and when Frylock tries to help him out, it takes a miracle to save Meatwad.

Space Conflict from Beyond Pluto: Aqua Teen Hunger Force mainstays Olgethorpe and Emory, aliens who Frylock manages to contact by accident, are introduced in this episode. Their ineptitude and attempts to act cooler than they are make them the comic equals of the Mooninites. The aliens attempt to destroy Shake, only to be disappointed by his lack of interest in the space ship.

Ol' Drippy: An unclean kitchen yields a friendly mold that tries to befriend Meatwad. But when Master Shake gets sick, he begins to eat "Ol' Drippy" in order to get better, an idea that Drippy came up with even though Frylock had some penicillin in his lab.

Revenge of the Mooninites: The Mooninites return, only to use Meatwad to win the "Foreigner belt," which gives them the powers of 1970s super band Foreigner. Unfortunately for them, Carl's love of 1970s rock bests them in the end when he uses the belt to turn them "hot blooded."

MC P Pants: The first appearance of this character, a worm that uses different appearances to get attention for himself. In this episode, Meatwad becomes a fan of MC P Pants, a rapper that drives Frylock and Master Shake nuts. In the end, the Force gets rid of P Pants, who ends up in hell.

Circus: Master Shake sells Meatwad to a circus, telling him that he is going to computer camp. When Carl makes reference to "Meat Mountain," the Force goes to the circus to see Meatwad's below average performance (he can only turn into an igloo, a hot dog, and Abraham Lincoln with a sword).

Dumber Days: Meatwad becomes worried that he isn't very smart when he realizes that he does not actually have a brain (he finds a turkey stuck where his brain should be and Master Shake tries to give him a bee hive and a chew toy for a brain). But Carl's illicit purchase of brains for Meatwad leads to his intelligence surpassing that of the scientist Frylock.

Love Mummy: Frylock discovers that there is a mummy living underneath their house and confronts it along with Meatwad. The mummy keeps asking for people to hug him and Meatwad tries using him to get new toys while Frylock tries to figure out a way to get rid of it permanently.

Dumber Dolls: David Cross of Mr. Show fame makes a great voice over appearance as Meatwad's new toy, a drunk and down-on-its-luck toy. Cross gives a great performance using his sarcastic tone to make fun of Frylock and Master Shake, while making Meatwad's other toys feel depressed about their lives.

Interfection: Master Shake and Meatwad use Frylock's computer without his permission and causes the room to fill up with pop up ads. Frylock tries to remedy the situation, but Shake and Meatwad, along with Carl, try to get credit cards and free pornography. One particularly hilarious moment is when Frylock tries to deal with an internet service provider that looks like a wizard and tries to offer him all sorts of "good deals."

Bad Replicant: Ogelthorpe and Emory try to trick the Force by creating a duplicate of Shake in order to infiltrate human society. Unfortunately, their laziness leads to a poor representation of Master Shake and the replicant ends up trying to fit in with the mutants.

PDA: Master Shake's insistence on staying ahead of the technological curve is revealed in this episode, when he wants to get a new PDA that a blue sewer monster lords over Shake. This episode shows a common thread of the show, which is making fun of techno-junkies and people who buy things like PDAs and computers as status symbols.

Special Features: The uncut Rabbot episode is pretty good, as well as the commentaries by the series creators and the deleted scenes from throughout the season.
