Shigella: A Bacterial Infection on the Rise This Summer
The bacteria-causing germ known as shigella causes diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps; oftentimes the diarrhea is bloody. The contagious disease is spread through contact with fecal matter and is easily spread and contracted in swimming pools, especially kiddie pools.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that when a person is exposed to the shigella bacteria, symptoms usually present within a day or two. Shegellosis, as the highly infectious disease is called, usually resolves itself within a week. However, the bacteria may remain in the person's body, specifically their stool, for up to four weeks after the onset of symptoms. The elderly and young children may require medical attention, even hospitalization, if the diarrhea becomes severe and/or is accompanied with a high fever.
The disease is spread through contact with fecal matter, says the Post. Swimming pools, especially those used by children, are easily contaminated and frequently a source of the disease, especially during hot summer days or holidays such as the Fourth of July. Wading pools can be especially bad because they are used by very young children, and the bacteria is easily transferred in standing water. Someone not washing their hands properly after changing a diaper or touching feces infected with the shigella germ is another way the disease may be spread.
Emily Gresham Wherle is a spokeswoman for the Northern Kentucky Health Department. According to the Post, she said: "With the holiday coming up, we're trying to warn people to not allow children to get in the pool if they've been sick and to make sure to wash hands thoroughly after changing diapers or using the bathroom. We're asking public pools to consider restricting kids in diapers. If you're having people over to your pool for the holiday, ask them if their children have been sick and don't let them get in the pool. If you're going to someone's house, don't get in the pool if you've been sick."
Many parents allow their small children to get into wading pools while wearing a thinner pull-up designed for swimming. However, says the Post, Wherle does not believe this type of pull-up is "a good enough barrier" to prevent contaminating wading pool water should the child defecate.
The treatment for shellagosis is antibiotics. According to the Post, Wherle suggests that anyone with symptoms should see a doctor and get a stool test. "When they have two negative stool tests two days apart, they're considered cured and no longer contagious," she said. And of course the best defense is to properly dispose of diapers, thoroughly wash hands and refrain from preparing food if you have been sick.
