In our throwaway society, the metal on the ends of the underwires are designed to be sharp, and this ensures manufacturers that you will have to once again buy a new bra within a short amount of time. This usually happens far sooner than expected. Consider the following ways to repair an underwire bra, and stop getting poked by a wayward wire once and for all.
A Stitch and a Little Ingenuity Can Repair an Underwire Bra
As previously mentioned, many underwire bras do not last long because they are not designed to last. The ends of the wires are sharp, and in time they poke through and require repair or replacement. Bra manufactures are counting on replacement rather than repair, but a simple repair can be achieved with a little electrical tape and heavy-duty upholstery thread that matches the color of the bra.
Begin by wrapping the wire tip with electrical tape or duct tape to prevent the wire from poking through after the repair. Once the metal tip is sufficiently covered, push the wire back in through the open hole. With the tip at least one-half of an inch away from the hole, stitch the opening closed using heavy-duty upholstery thread. Cotton thread is too weak and will not be able to withstand the pressure. This repair should hold, but if it does not try one of the other ways to repair an underwire bra until you discover the method that holds.
Complete the Repair with Fabric Glue
Strong fabric glue is sometimes all that is necessary to repair a hole. Follow product label instructions for warnings and usage advice, and with the underwire pushed far back into the slot, glue the material together. It must be held with a strong clamp until the glue dries completely. Fabric glue is naturally washable, and the repair should hold if completed with care.
Repair the Underwire Material with Strong Fleece Patching
Fleece is one of the only types of material that does not fray, and extra-strong thick fleece material can be used along with fabric glue to create a patch to fix an underwire bra. Cut a square patch of sturdy fleece material, and with the underwire in place, glue the patch to the bra. Hold it in place with a small clamp until the glue dries and the bra should be almost as good as new. Optionally, both cups can be lined with the fleece while completely the repair for an extra comfy bra that will also provide a little extra size.
