Swimming Pool Opening Tips for All Pool Types

Save $ 125 - $ 200 on professional pool maintenance. Use these tips to open a swimming pool yourself.

As warm weather approaches, thus marks the beginning of pool season. Whether you have a spacious inground swimming pool or a modest above ground pool, pre-Memorial Day is the best time to start thinking of opening the pool. This will give you ample time to check equipment operation, and get your water in balance for a successful swim season.

To ensure the task goes smoothly, use the pool opening tips listed below. A swimming pool company will come out to your home and do the job for you, but will charge between $ 125 - $ 200 plus the cost of chemicals to do so. Therefore, you can save a bundle by learning how to open a swimming pool yourself.

Pool opening tips -

Remove excess water from cover - Pump excess water off the cover and gently sweep off any other leaves or debris. This is extremely important, as dumping off this filth into your pool can make it difficult to balance the water later on.

Remove the cover - Very carefully remove the cover from the pool. This task will be easier with two people.

Clean the cover before storing - Use a cover cleaner to thoroughly clean the cover before storing for the summer. Be sure to let it air dry completely before storing to prevent mold and mildew growth.

Remove plugs and gizmos, etc. - If you used plugs or gizmos to keep lines from freezing, remove them and set them aside for next year's pool closing. Place the skimmer basket back into position if it was removed at closing, too.

Reconnect equipment -If the pump or filter was disconnected or disassembled at closing, reconnect everything to get them ready for opening.

Return the ladders and other equipment - If you removed the ladder, it can be returned to its proper location now. Additionally, if you own an inground pool and disconnected the dive or slide, they can be reinstalled now. Inspect the bolts for any sign or rusting or corrosion.

Add water - Since most of us lower the water level at closing, it will need to be raised in order to open a swimming pool. Add enough water to fill approximately 2/3 of the way up to the skimmer.

Turn on the equipment - Turn on the pump and filter to circulate the water inside the pool. If you have a heater, turn it on as well. If you have problems with the equipment, now is the best time to tend to it.

Sweep the pool - Scoop and sweep leaves, pine needles, and other debris from the bottom of the pool. Manually vacuum the pool if you don't have an automatic model to do the job for you.

Add chemicals - Once you have the water free from debris, you can add your pool chemicals. Add pool shock and algaecide.

Test the water levels - Wait 48 hours and test your water. Adjust the chemicals accordingly to ensure clear pool water all season long.

To keep pool water crystal clear, remember to shock the pool regularly and always shock after a rainstorm, or after a large group of people swim. Test the water yourself frequently, or take it to a local pool specialty store and ask them to test it for you. Most will run the testing for you at no charge, provide a free analysis and make recommendations, provided you purchase chemicals from them.
