How to Make a Fake Roman Shade
You can make your own fake Roman Shade in minutes and you do not even know how to sew.
To Make a Fake Roman Shade You Will Need:
Tape Measure
Sewing Machine (or no sew)
Scissors
Iron
Ribbon or extra fabric
Tension rod
The very first step in making your own fake roman shade is to measure how wide and tall your window is. A roman shad is traditionally a flat panel of fabric custom fit right inside the window frame. Your fake roman shade will be this as well; it just will not have the hardware to pull it up and down.
In place f the tricky roman shade hardware kits or expensive custom roman shades you will use ribbon and have a stationary roman shade.
Now, cut out your fabric. You want it to be about two inches wider than your window and bout 6 inches taller.
Turn your iron on.
Fold the left and the right rough cut edges in 1 inch and iron them down.
Now, sew along the sides of your fake roman shade to finish the edges.
Now, on the bottom edge of the roman shade panel repeat this same step. That will be the hem of your roman shade curtain.
Now, the top is the trickiest part of your fake roman shade and even it is still a very easy step in this project.
You want to fold you rough end in about ½ inch and iron it down. Now, sew this down to hem the top edge.
Now, cut off two long piece of ribbon. These should be the height of your window times 2. You can make them longer or shorter as you will though.
Measure two to three inches in from the top of the hemmed edge of the roman shade panel. Now, measure in about 5 inches from the left and five inches from the right. Mark these two spots with a pin.
Place the middle of your ribbon flat on these two points. One ribbon for each side.
Sew the ribbons to the curtain. I recommend and X shape to hold the ribbons securely in place. The front of the side should have a long piece of ribbon hanging over and the back of the shade or curtain panel should also.
Now, fold the top hemmed edge over about 2 to three inches. The X you sewed your ribbon on should be the top edge of this fold. You want to create a pocket for your tension rod to slide through.
I like to pin this in place. You can make this pocket as small or large as you need or want to fit your tension rod.
Be sure to pull your ribbons out of the way and then sew this line with yoru sewing machine.
Now, insert your curtain tension rod and place the fake roman shade in your window.
Now, roll up the curtain as high as you want. Use the ribbons to tie the curtain off at the height you want creating a bow at the bottom and you are finished!!
To add privacy you can always add a sheer curtain behind your fake roman shade on another tension rod.
