Are Plus Size Models Pushing Thin Models Out?
An opinion article about the new push for plus size models.
The modeling industry used to be about the Marilyn Monroe types. The classic pin up girl of the 1950's was typically curvaceous and today would be considered overweight and possibly obese. Then came the Twiggy era, and suddenly it seemed as if a model could not be too thin. Gone were the curves that had long been the object of many a male fantasy. Suddenly, models were stick thin, and it was often left to the imagination as to whether one was looking at a woman or a man.
The modeling industry seemed to enjoy the tall, stick thin emaciated models because it was easy to fit them for the clothing that the designers made. Suddenly, society followed suit, and thin became "in". When this happened the diet and exercise industry had a field day. Diet books and videos flew off the shelves. Over the counter diet aids became popular and so did memberships to gyms.
Something else happened, however. Women became so obsessed with their weight that they began starving themselves or developing eating disorders ranging from anorexia to compulsive overeating. Young teenage girls have become so obsessed with weight that they are doing unhealthy things such as starving themselves or smoking cigarettes.
Recently there has been a push toward models who are more curvaceous. Dove had an ad campaign that took real women with real figures. The models were beautiful and curvaceous. The ad campaign was a huge success. More recently there has been magazine covers that feature plus size models and the response was very positive.
Are thin models losing out to the new plus size models? Time will tell. I personally hope that the plus size modeling craze continues to grow. It will inspire girls to be more accepting of their bodies just as they are. Hopefully, it will inspire self esteem in young women.
So many of the problems of today's youth revolve around a lack of self esteem. By encouraging a healthier, more realistic body image in young women, we will also be encouraging a more healthy society. This will also have an effect on young men. Perhaps they will learn to see the beauty in all sizes and shapes and not feel pressured to conform to a certain standard of beauty.
