Olga Gonzalez-Ramos and Bullying Awareness
Olga Gonzalez-Ramos, plus size model, actress, motivational speaker, mentor, writer and more shares her thoughts on beauty and bullying.
I had the wonderful opportunity to steal away a few moments of the one and only Olga Gonzalez-Ramos to get the inside on her newest venture into an anti-bullying program. Olga is a celebrity plus-size model, actress, Latina Blogger, Journalist, and motivational speaker. This small town girl originally from Weehawken currently resides in New Jersey, with her husband and 4 children.
Please enjoy my journey with Olga through this interview to get a peek into the woman behind the gorgeous face.
Me: Hi Olga! I want to first thank you for allowing me this interview with you. I don't want to take up too much of your time so I hope you don't mind if we start with learning a little more about you and what made you choose the industry that you work in.
Olga: No problem Deana. I am happy to answer any questions you may have. As far as what made me choose plus size modeling or mentoring?
Me: Both!
Olga: Okay. As far as mentoring, I was told all my life, oh you are so pretty, if only you lost weight. I got tired of hearing that and one day figured I may never lose that weight, yet I still feel beautiful. I am still a woman that wants to be complimented and not hide because I wear a larger size and society keeps telling me I am not pretty. I realized there may be hundreds of other full-figured women around the world, feeling the same way and being told to lose weight or hide in a closet. This is what led me to want to mentor young chubby teenagers. I don't want them to feel stigmatized by their appearance and from my own experience, I knew that they needed to have someone to look up to that could in fact relate to them, support them, and help them work through the emotions that society can toss upon them cruelly.
I believe that beauty can be found anywhere especially on a plus size person. I fight for the right to be chubby and not live with excuses. I do not support being unhealthy but if someone is fat, bigger or wears a larger size they are still human, need to go about their normal lives without the finger pointing.
As far as plus size modeling, it has just been a more recent thing in my life, just a little over a year now. I made the front cover of the local paper. The cover said 'Big Girl' and everything just fell into place right there and then. So I guess in a way, it found me.
Me: I think it is a very Nobel thing that you are doing for our young girls, and excited for your career in modeling. I am sure that also lifts many young girls' spirits seeing you on covers! So tell me Olga, what do you enjoy most out of all the work you do?
Olga: Besides the fact that I get to play dress up and pose for knock out pictures with brilliant photographers, stylists, make-up artists, and designers, I enjoy being a mentor. Being that big girl that says, I am big and what, I live my life. I am sexy, have a beautiful family, handsome man, big house, dog, cat, amazing friends, yet I do yoga; yes I don't have to starve and wear a size 0-2 to do runway or be in magazines.
Me: Did you always vision yourself as someday being on a magazine cover; was it your childhood dream?
Olga: No, actually I wanted to be a writer and I am blessed to say I have accomplished that and so much more.
Me: That's right, you have a blog site correct?
Olga: Yes I do, Curvaciously Yours. There is something there for everyone so make sure to check it out.
Me: Olga, I want to change the direction up just a little bit and talk some about your passion with Bully Awareness. Was there anything about your younger years that led to your passion?
Olga: No, not really. I grew up adored by my family as the only child and by my friends. I really wasn't bullied ever, but being a mother of four I have seen it first hand, with my children and it's an ugly business - one that needs to be stopped.
Me: I agree with you 100% on that Olga. What is your advice to parents on how to handle a situation where their child or children are being bullied?
Olga: Stand up for your child, report it right away to the school and even speak to the police department. Times have changed and now there are laws against being bullied. Take notes, have that understanding with your child that he is not alone. I got my son a whistle when he was younger and it sounds funny but when he got bullied in the restroom he blew that whistle and they caught the kid. The kid has left him alone since then. It is important as a parent to try and have someone be there for your child. Do not let him/her go home alone if they are a walker or there is a time frame when they are not under supervision. This can prevent so much; even if it's a parent/buddy system.
Me: What are some guidelines that communities can do to help the families that are dealing with bullies?
Olga: Some parents that do stay home have begun a bully watch with their kids and children of other neighbors. Keep an open relationship with your child's teacher; even an email a week can make a huge difference. Sometimes are kids are afraid to tell; they are threaten by the bullies and told not to tell anyone of the bullying. But a good teacher and a caring parent can see the signs. If they look sad or angry all the time, they don't talk anymore or just head straight into their room, or they don't want to go to school anymore a parent should see these as signs of something more is going on behind the scenes. We as parents have got to make our kids feel safe; safe enough to tell us when there is trouble. Also, I am a big believer that children that have to walk home alone or are being bullied or at risk of being bullied should carry a cell phone for emergency calling always.
Me: Great points! What projects would you like to work on in the future?
Olga: I would like a huge anti-bully campaign; I mean on buses, billboards, newspapers and do it with my family. I want to share my children's story and show the world that we must protect our kids from hurtful bullies.
Me: That would be awesome. I am glad to see that more awareness is being made towards bullying, but we still have a long ways to go. So Olga, please tell me, who has influenced you the most and why?
Olga: My parents, my mother. Every day out of her mouth she used the word beautiful, love and understanding. She was my foundation, the strength around the walls that created 'Olgaplusmodel'. And now I am the same for my children and for my daughter Raquel who is 8.
Me: Other than your family and work, what are some other passions in your life?
Olga: Now we are talking! Cooking and gardening! Gardening - I live for this. Put me in some dirt and throw me on my knees, and you will get in return one of the most detailed gardens ever! I also enjoy Salsa dancing; once I start you either dance with me all night or get out of my way. But seriously, it is my family; the time I share with them feeds my soul. But I also love going to the movies and watching movies at home. We have movie night 3 times a week, that should say it all to you.
Me: What is a typical day in the life of Olga like?
Olga: Wake up at 5:30, get kids ready, walk dog, depending on what day I can go back to bed with my laptop and do my writing. If it's a work day, I work from 4:00 pm to midnight. On those days I stay close to home and try and clean, do chores, and rest up a bit for the long evening ahead of me. If it's a day I don't work, I am up early on the phone; on Skype having meetings with my London clients. I do my photo shoots mid-day and try and to be home by five to make dinner. Then it's check homework, time with my family, and of course text all day with my phone; it never stops.
Me: You just made me very tired! I think I need a nap for you! So Olga, what keeps you awake at night?
Olga: (Laughing) My writing work. I enjoy writing in a quiet house, so I wait for my family to be sleeping and then I let my creative juices flow.
Me: So one can easily say, writing makes you happy. What is your definition of happiness?
Olga: Accepting yourself, working on the things you want to be better at or you want to change. Leading by example and going after your dreams and goals. Hard work isn't just a paycheck that shows a lot of overtime, it's falling down, getting up while no one is extending their hand and knowing that better times will come, no matter what and no matter who.
Me: What is your greatest achievement so far?
Olga: I want to say being featured and celebrated in Latina magazine. Yes, Latin women are curvy but that magazine caters to a straight size or thinner Latina but they gave me a chance and they loved what they saw.
Me: What 5 words describe who you are as a person?
Olga: That is easy - stubborn, loyal, warrior, beautiful, big girl!
Me: Great words! Okay Olga, everyone has a fear. What would you say is your biggest fear?
Olga: My biggest fear is doing so much for others that I may forget the ones I love. That is why family is so important to me. I travel often; I can take my kids at times and sometimes I can't. I do miss important times and I am so hard on myself for these moments. But everything I do is for them so I keep on pushing.
Me: For fun now, Olga, tell me what was the most embarrassing moment in your life?
Olga: (Laughing) When I was going to my first day as a freshman in high school and moms wanted to walk me across the street right to the door step. I kept saying no. She kept saying yes and there we are walking across the street. I am a few feet away from the door when she trips, falls, and takes me down with her. We fell in front of the entire school. Sure I became the popular girl; the boys loved me, and my girlfriends adored me but from time to time I would hear, 'Hey aren't you that girl that fell down with our mom outside and you both screamed so loud when you fell down?' Yup, that was me.
Me: (Laughing) I bet that was embarrassing! So, if there was anything you could change about your appearance, what would it be and why?
OLGA: I love who I am and how I am built but on the real, it would be my JLO booty. I am actually famous for it in this industry. Not many big girls are built like me or let's say gifted back there. Growing up it was crazy how the boys and then men, would chase me; even now. When my online modeling pals meet me, they all say wow, girl if I had that rear I would be more famous than JLO or the Kardashian. I just laugh.
