Reasons to Cancel Married to Medicine - No Prescription Needed
What networks are showing us is growing old and it appears that they want to give us more of the same thing.
This season, I had the opportunity to watch the semi-highly anticipated show, Married to Medicine. I was extremely disappointed and so were many of the people I asked. Some did not even watch the entire season while others gave it a chance and said they would not be watching it again. Personally, it gave me flashbacks to season 1 of another Bravo show filmed in Atlanta - the look of the cast and personas were very similar. Where did they get this new set of drama queens?
This show took the worst of many different "wives" shows and premiered with all of the stereotypical cattiness and bitchiness I am tired of seeing. Moreover, it escalated throughout the entire season. These women may be intelligent but TV is not showing it. These Atlanta based shows are starting to equate the "peach state" with women who are not so sweet.
This show introduced us to both women married to physicians as well as two female physicians in practice. The pretense is that if you are married to a doctor, you have to act a certain way and represent your husband positively at all times. That was the mantra throughout the entire season; however, the wives constantly embarrassed their husbands. In my opinion, all of the wives had issues relating to each other and communicating. It was the same old talking behind each other's back, snide remark making, eye rolling stuff typical of these shows. I did not intend to watch any episodes beyond the first one but, I was hoping for something different. Perhaps it was morbid curiosity - the outcome was very repetitive and nothing exciting. This cast seemed to be imitating the "mean girls" on other shows. We had yet, another woman on TV who refers to herself in third person - again, nothing original.
Off the bat, there was nothing worthy of emulating or coveting. Moreover, I did not find any of these women to be likeable. If I was married to a doctor, I could not associate in this circle of women portrayed on the show. In fact, if their TV personalities are indicative of who they really are, they would not even be on my friends list. Neither marrying wealthy nor having the finest things in life can give a woman class. Either you have it or you don't - and I did not see it in this show.
My prediction about the plot of the show was the usual, a bunch of women tearing each other down instead of trying to support and uplift each other. It is difficult enough in life just being a woman and juggling the various roles and responsibilities. Here is an innovative idea… Show us women who genuinely want the best for each other, who are not jealous, who are not vindictive and who are not secretively plotting to sabotage each other. Unlike unicorns, we do exist.
I really expected more from women who are supposed to be living this coveted lifestyle married to doctors and I am trying not to use certain terms but, let me just say, you can marry a woman and put her in a fine house but obviously, in this case, you cannot take certain attributes out of the woman.
Personally, I, as well as many of my friends, am fed up with seeing this kind of garbage that seems to get re-created. This show, as well as many others like it, is just a made-for-TV-reality-drama. Reality shows, just like the news, seem to pick the worst representations of us and portray us all as this narrowly defined one dimensional image in a box. You have to wonder if this is a scripted drama series because that is not the reality I know. All of these alleged reality shows have far too much coincidental drama for real life, especially in Atlanta.
Many of us have had enough of these shows and this is one we are turning off! They are teaching young girls that behaving in such a manner is acceptable. Conflict is a part of life and people are not going to always get along but maybe behaving badly is part of the contract when you sign up to participate on a "reality" TV show.
A quote by Eleanor Roosevelt comes to mind when I think about what I want to see on television - "Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people." All I saw was a bunch of small-minded people making haphazard efforts to work together fruitlessly and then bash each other between scenes in their individual commentaries. I do not recall seeing any long-term successful collaboration because everything turned sour. We have seen this in the other Bravo show out of Atlanta and the stage was set for this new show.
The two actual female doctors on the show were said to have been practicing together but there was some kind of conflict with another un-named partner and their two practices were initially next door to each other. Consequently, the same doctor was moving again or was scheduled to move into a building owned by another doctor and his wife who are both on the show. It would have been really great to see the two female doctors in practice together on the show and working collaboratively building their business but, I guess that is less "dramatic" and the objective is to create tension.
There were some physical altercations during the season and the cast members were embarrassed and apologized repeatedly for their behavior. The ladies said it was not planned, just one of those things that happened. Bravo chose to air that footage because at any point, the footage could have been edited. I challenge Bravo to break the mold television has placed "wives" in by redefining success. If success means being "very rich" and ignorant, I'll pass. If success means borderline buffoonery, you can keep it. More of us will watch uplifting shows without all of this unnecessary fabricated drama. Think about this… The Cosby Show, although fictional, showed a family dealing with life and we watched it faithfully! It was one of the most successful shows in history and even had a successful spinoff - A Different World. My generation grew up watching women like Claire Huxtable as well as the other women associated with those shows and they were who we aspired to be. They portrayed the images we became. These "reality women" are becoming role models for young women and girls - these are the last people we want them emulating.
Reality TV has taken over the bulk of networks and somebody has to take the lead in setting a positive example by restoring the reputation of women. What networks are showing us is growing old and it appears that they want to give us more of the same thing.
Bravo, I am calling a code blue because one show is in critical condition, this show started off on life support and you need to pull the plug as to not prolong our suffering. Bravo, just say no - this is the worst of the "wives" shows. This "brand" you have for the women in Atlanta needs to be discontinued. After the first three episodes my TV was just on the Bravo channel waiting for the Sunday night line-up following this… garbage.
