A Guide to Attaching Ferns to Garden Trees
Establish a garden of lush green ferns that enjoy growing against the trunks of trees.
There are several varieties of fern that epiphytic, which means that they grow by attaching themselves to other plants, while still obtaining moisture and nutrients from the surrounding environment. This is different from parasitic plants, which actually take nutrients from the host plant, eventually killing it.
Epiphytic ferns do not need to bury their roots in the soil; instead they become fixed to outer bark of the tree trunk, and catch falling leaf litter and other organic debris in their crown, which is necessary for healthy growth.
By using mature trees as hosts, it is possible to create a fernery, giving the garden an extra dimension.
The most popular epiphytic ferns for growing in trees are the Elkhorn and the Staghorn Ferns (Platycerium species).
These majestic ferns can grow and spread to more than two meters, with arching green fronds that are the foliage of the plant.
Other epiphytic ferns include the Layered Tassel Fern (Lycopodium species), which has dramatic hanging fronds to two meters in length; the Hare's Foot Fern (Davallia species) which has fascinating creeping rhizomes; and the Felt Ferns (Pyrossia species), which have fleshy fronds and can withstand drier conditions than the others.
The main aim is to encourage the fern to grow onto the trunk of the tree, while causing as little damage as possible to either plant. The fern can actually be nailed against the tree trunk without suffering trauma. Ferns can also be attached to flat boards of timber, which are then attached to the side of the tree to create the same effect.
At all times care should be taken not to constrict the growth of either the tree or the fern, or to cause damage to the bark, as this may leave the way open for insect infestation and disease.
Never wrap wire tightly around the trunk of a tree to hold the fern in position. As the tree grows the wire will cut into the bark, eventually causing the death of the host plant.
Attaching your Elkhorn to a tree:
1. Water the tree trunk and the fern well before planting it in position. The host tree should have non-shedding bark, so the fern will attach.
2. Use washers to protect the fern from the sharp head of the nails. Washers can be made from leather, to fit snugly under the top of the nail.
3. Nail the fern directly onto the tree trunk, using galvanized nails with will not rust. Use at least six nails to provide good support.
4. Water the fern will to help it establish. Feed the fern organic matter, such as banana skins, until the leaf litter cycle is established.
Attaching a Staghorn to a board:
1. Pack several handfuls of sphagnum moss between the board and the fern, to provide a soft base.
2. Nail the fern to the board, using galvanized nails and leather washers to protect the fern from the nail head.
3. Hang the board in a tree that will provide suitable shade, shelter and leaf litter for nutrients.
Early spring is ideal for mounting and watering your ferns. Attach the fern, either directly to a tree or onto a timber board. It is important to water well, especially during the first few months when the fern is establishing its position.
Continue watering and feeding throughout summer. Water weekly and feed the fern once every three or four weeks with a banana skin or a handful of rotting leaf matter, tucked into the crown to promote steady growth.
Winter is propagation time. If young plantlets have formed on the base of an established fern, these can be separated using a clean, sharp knife. Mount them onto a separate board until large enough to attach to a tree trunk. You may end up with enough to sell at a market or garage sale.
