Troy Spring State Park
Like most Florida springs, the water is clear and cold. However Troy Spring contains something no other Florida spring has; a Civil War era steamboat.
This 70-80 feet deep first magnitude spring has been a long time swimming hole and local hang out. It was purchased by the state in 1995 and visitors still come for the same reasons. Divers come from miles around to swim the wreck, explore these super deep springs and even to teach dive classes.
Once only accessible by boating the Suwannee River between mile markers 82-83, the park now has a paved road located off of US 27 on CR 425 near the town of Branford. Fees for park entrance are $5 per car load of up to eight people and $ for single occupants. The park stays open year round from 8 Am until sundown.
Since the parks opening, a boat dock, paved access trails to the spring and restrooms have been added. There are several picnic tables with grills for the perfect family outing.
Fishing is good all along the Suwannee River and surrounding springs, however there is no fishing in the head spring. A Florida fishing permit is required.
Scuba Diving is the primary sport here in the deep waters of Troy Spring State Park and has been for decades. All divers need to show certification upon arrival at the main office to dive these spectacular waters. Only open water diving is allowed and lights are forbidden. Of course solo dives are off limits as they are in all state owned springs.
Snorkeling the spring is also very popular. Swimming over the top of the confederate ship, the Madison, is a treat you'll never forget. Many of the ribs and metal casing that held this huge steamship together can still be seen exactly were she sank in 1863.
