4 Things Your Child's Swim Coach Wants to Tell You
Help your child have the best swim team experience possible by keeping these tips in mind.
If you are reading this, chances are high that you are a swim mom or dad. There are many of you out there; swimming remains a popular youth sport for all ages heading into the 2020 summer Olympic Games. Kids love the water, the camaraderie with their teammates, and the competition; parents love the exercise and less tangible lessons that sport teaches children. It's a win-win for everyone, right?
That's what we, the coaches, hope. It's important to remember, however, that your encouragement and support of your child's endeavors are equally as important as the technique tips and training he or she receive from us. While we are focused on our athletes during practice time, there are things that we wish we had more time to impart to you, the parents, as well. Here are a few suggestions to help maximize your children's success in the pool without creating extra waves for them.
Do Your Homework. You wouldn't expect your child to take a test without studying for it. Likewise, you should do your homework about the sport before the first day of swim practice. Familiarize yourself with the equipment your child needs, the lingo, the different events available to your child's age group, and the rules of each stroke. USA Swimming has an excellent web site geared toward educating swim parents here. While there won't be a parent-teacher conference to discuss your performance, your child will be excited and proud that his or her parent has taken the time to learn more about their new athletic pursuit.
Keep Us in the Loop. Do you have transportation issues or a scheduling conflict with your child's practice time? Is your summer vacation planned during the week of a big meet? Does your child have a medical issue that could interfere with their training? We coaches may mean the world to our athletes, but we aren't mind readers. We don't know that something is up unless you tell us; please don't rely on your child to communicate important issues on your behalf. Find out the best way to get in touch your coach early in the season, and make don't hesitate to contact. Knowing this information will help us accommodate medical conditions, scheduling conflicts, and meet entries without your child experiencing any confusion, misunderstanding, or discomfort.
Use Your Head. Coaches can't possibly be involved in every aspect of your athlete's development in the sport, no matter how much we would like to be. I have seen parents buy their children a quarter-pounder combo meal at a swim meet and then wonder why their kids are throwing up after the next race. Likewise, I have had parents ask me why their child gained time when I know they spent the entire previous day in the heat riding rollercoasters at the local amusement park. Come on, guys. We aren't asking you to change every aspect of your life; just use your common sense. Good nutrition and proper rest are important to an athlete's performance, and coaches play a minimal role in controlling these factors from the deck. Help us out when you're at home!
Stay in Your Lane. We've all seen the pushy swim parent. At practice, they're the ones pacing the side of the pool during practice with a stopwatch, barking splits at their children every time they touch the wall. They hover behind us, repeating our instructions to their child as we explain the next set. They know every best time of every child in every event in their child's age group; at meets, they use this information to remind their kids before every race which of their teammates they need to beat to take home a coveted blue ribbon or keep their spot on the "A" relay. The experienced coach's advice is simple: Don't be this parent. There is simply no quicker way to discourage or embarrass your child and frustrate his or her progress in the sport. The negative effects of pushy sports parents are well documented; don't cause your child to become a statistic.
