Even at a young age swim team is a fun and educational place for your kids. Being on a National team can offer many things to kids of all ages.
From the day we put her in the water we knew our daughter was at home. We tried soccer and gymnastics, basketball and tennis. Anything that offered a team she had played and was frustrated. We heard about a national program one day called USA swim, we went on their website and were amazed by the information we found.
USA Swim is the top of the food chain in competitive swimming. They provide the rules and regulations that shape the sport. With head quarters at the Olympic training center in Colorado you are guaranteed a professional and competitive set of standards. USA swim has programs from national teams all the way down to our local teams. Not only are they committed to the athletes but to coaching, administering and officiating the teams they govern. Now a bit about competitive swimming at a young age. On the USA website you are able to research a local team. I suggest going and watching a practice without your child, then with your child. Although these teams are governed by USA they differ greatly. you will need to determine what you want from a team. Are you looking for a fun place for your child to et a great workout and make some friends? Are you looking for the science of the strokes to be perfected and the wonderful scholarship programs can help them in college? Are you looking for a team to help your "Michael Phelps" make it to the Olympics. (You must remember that the odds of your child becoming an Olympian is.0002%). Each local team has it's own philosophy and to create a good environment that philosophy and your need must be in sync. Most teams require a tryout and then a recommendation for a team is made. This process is usually as easy as swimming 25 or 50 yards of each stroke.
After making a team your child will eventually be asked to swim in meets. These are available year round and begin as early as 6 years old. Meets are generally Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday in 3-4 hour sessions. They have a set schedule of races and swimmers are allowed to swim 3-5 events per day. Each event has a time standard set by USA Swim. These time standards determine the category at which your athlete swims. Beginning with all times in a C classification. As your swimmer becomes faster the classifications go up as follows, B, BB, A, AA, AAA, and AAAA. Each meet offers some form of rewards. In the 8 year old and under category they usually award best times ribbons which really inspire the little ones to set personal goals. Most meets offer ribbons to the top 8 in each race and category. Sometimes the championship meets will offer medals for the top three and many will give team trophies.
Swimming may not be the first thing you think of when you think of sports. You may not even have known that there was a national organization for swimming. But the sport is a wonderful place for kids to learn about goals and hard work. From personal experience it is also a great place to make friends and have fun.
