10 Swim Training Tips for Women
A great list of swimming tips to help you improve both technique and speed.
Video Tape
Have someone you know video tape you while you practice. This will give you better insight on where you should focus extra practice on. If you don't have access to a video recorder, then ask a friend to watch you and time you. This will at least help you some. Your friend should know a few things about swim training or else its pretty useless information.
Swim Flippers
Go purchase a pair of swimming flippers, and practice with these a few days out of the week. Swimming with flippers will teach you posture and position. You will learn how to swim faster and what position works best. Once your good with the flippers, practice without them, but keeping the same posture and stance.
Learn one thing at a time
Try doing your normal routine and then add one extra step to it. It could be something like strokes, flips or anything that you need to do. First get your basic routine good. Make sure times and everything are exactly where you want them. Then add one extra step. Practice your routine with the extra step until you reach the time you like. Then add another step. Adding one thing at a time will not only be easier to remember, but it will show you where your problem area is, rather then trying to figure it out.
Technique then Speed
Getting your technique learned well is vital to speed control. If you do not have a good technique down, then you mine as well give up the whole speed idea. Plan a technique that will benefit you. Once you have learned your technique, then and only then can you begin working on your speed.
Weight Training
Before you begin learning a new swimming routine, it might be beneficial to do a month or two of weight training. You can do this yourself, or hire a trainer. Weight training will help you achieve muscle mass which is vital to speed in swimming. A strong body can swim longer and faster. During weight training you should focus on pull-ups, push-ups and upper back strength.
Stretching
Before each session in the pool, spend 10 minutes on dry land stretching. You don't want to strain or pull a muscle. You should focus on your triceps, shoulders and back during your stretching routines.
100s
Complete reps of 100 for everything you do. This goes with the old saying "practice makes perfect". It's just as true when you're swimming. Practice every area at least 100 times in a single sitting. So if you push off the wall while in competition, then during your 100s, you should push off the wall 100 times, all the same way.
You're Thoughts
Your thoughts should only be focused on swimming when you are swimming. Don't think about the kids who need to be picked up, or the laundry that needs to be completed. You need to have 100% focus on swimming. When you don't focus 100%, then you're not giving it your all.
Breathing
It is a good idea to learn a few breathing techniques for swimming. Your breathing can play a large role in how well and how fast you can swim. Learning a breathing technique can speed up your time a lot, and helps your body feel better.
Learn Large Strokes
The longer you can stretch your arms while stroking, the faster you can be. Try practicing on dry land. Lay down flat on your belly, and stretch your arms out as long as you can. Then hold them there for two minutes. Repeat this several times a day. After a while, your reach will be further, and your speed will improve.
