Teaching Your Children to Swim 101

Nowadays, it's almost required to know how to swim. There are tons of water parks as well as rivers, streams, and lakes to swim in.

Nowadays, it's almost required to know how to swim. There are tons of water parks as well as rivers, streams, and lakes to swim in. If you have kids, they probably get invited to pool parties. The problem is that it just isn't safe to let your children go to a pool party, if they don't know how to swim. If you don't know how to swim yourself, that's the first place to start.

Take a class at your local YMCA or community center or another program available in your area. You can't teach your kids to swim if you don't know how! So let's say you do know how to swim, but your little loved ones still haven't had the opportunity to learn. How do you go about teaching them? Let's explore this, shall we?

First of all, not one person should ever be in the water, even if they can reach the bottom by standing up without a life vest. Life vests are the first step to safety which exceeds every other aspect of swimming.

Children that don't know how to swim generally have no idea that it isn't so easy to swim without using floaties, or something of that nature. After all, we as parents will always make sure they are held in our arms or they are using a flotation device. So once they have something such as a life vest on, we can teach them the basics of "doggie paddling".

You can make it fun and play a game with them to see who can tread with their head above water the longest. Once they are comfortable with this, you can take the life vest off, but stay close! It's time to get them steady, and let them go! After a few days of the child successfully keeping themselves above water in one place, it's probably time to see if they can get from one side of the shallow end, to the other.

You can place plastic step stools anchored by rocks if need be, so they have a place to stand and stay above water if they feel the need. Have them practice going from one end to the other for a couple of weeks, and just remind them to have patience because they will want to wander to the deep end with their new found skills. After you are confident they can do it, go ahead and let them venture out to the deeper parts of the pool, but stay close and never turn your back. Drowning happens quickly.

Now that they are little fish, teach them to hold their breath under water, while staying in one place. You want to follow the steps described for treading above water to reach the goal of being able to swim above and below water in all areas of the pool. Once that is accomplished, you are ready for the fun stuff! Cannon balls and even diving comes next, so have fun!
