YMCA Swim Lessons Review: Does the YMCA Really Teach You How to Swim?

A few years ago, I made the decision to finally learn how to swim and signed up for lessons at the YMCA. But do their lessons really work?

A few years ago, I made the decision to finally learn how to swim. As a child, I had a fear of water that prevented me from taking swim lessons sooner. But as an adult, that fear had vanished and it was time to learn how to swim. So, I called the YMCA and signed up for swim lessons.

Their indoor pool is supposedly heated, but it was really cold. It was so cold that I would leave the place shivering. Either the YMCA isn't properly heating the pool or they think people like it that way. I've played in other indoor pools and outdoor pools that had warmer water than that.

Swim lessons was nothing like I expected. The instructor made us wear swim belts that were like life preservers. We couldn't do anything in them and all of us begged not to have to wear them. After a couple of days, she relented and allowed us not to use them.

Mostly, we did exercises in the water than learn how to swim. We held onto the side of the pool and kicked our legs. I felt like I had signed up for water aerobics. Not that I minded it, but it wasn't helping me learn how to swim, which was the reason I was there.

We also used a lot of toys in the water including pool noodles, mini boards, and flippers. I understand the need to make one feel comfortable in the water. But we couldn't do anything on our own without the instructor's help. So really, the toys didn't help since they didn't make us independent.

None of us were taught how to swim. The class wasn't actual swim lessons, but merely a class to make one comfortable with the water. However, none of the people in my group were afraid of the water to begin with. When I complained, I was told that the class has to be taken a few times. But what good is that when the adult classes aren't set at levels such as beginner, intermediate, and advanced? The small children's classes have levels, but the adult classes do not. Adding levels to the adult swim classes would be a great improvement.

It was apparent from the beginning of the swim classes that the instructor, who was in her late teens, wasn't knowledgeable enough in the art of teaching others to swim. It was also obvious that she didn't have enough time to teach us since there was only one of her and about ten of us.

I felt ripped off after having taken swim lessons at the YMCA. The only way an adult is going to learn to swim at the YMCA is by taking the expensive private lessons or if they add levels to the adult classes.
