London 2020 Olympics Obscure Sports Viewing Guide: Modern Pentathlon
Modern pentathlon was created by Baron Pierre de Coubertin based on skills a 19th century cavalry soldier would need to escape from behind enemy lines. Athletes compete in fencing, swimming, riding, pistol shooting and cross country running.
Modern Pentathlon may well be the most obscure sport in the Olympics. Created by modern Games founder Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the competition is modeled after the skills a 19th century cavalry soldier would require if caught behind enemy lines. Men and women compete in five events on a single day: fencing, swimming, horseback riding, pistol shooting and cross country running. Competition will be held at three London venues: the Aquatics Centre, Copper Box, and Greenwich Park.
Equipment
Modern pentathletes must master a number of pieces of equipment to be successful. Fencing is contested using the epee, which is the modern equivalent of the classic dueling sword. Riding is done over a show jumping course on an unfamiliar mount, assigned to competitors just 20 minutes before the event start. Shooting is done with a high-tech laser pistol that registers hits on a special target.
Competition and Scoring
Athletes accumulate points in fencing, swimming and riding which positions them for the final combined 3000 meter cross country run and shooting competition (called the "combined event"). The day starts with fencing. Each athlete duels every other athlete. The winner is the first to make a scoring touch during the one minute bout. If neither fencer scores during the duel, both register a loss.
The 200 meter swim is performed against the clock, with pentathletes earning 1000 points for an "at par" performance of 2:30 for the men and 2:40 for the women. Each one-third second slower or faster results in a bonus or deduction of 4 points.
Show jumping takes place on a 12 obstacle course with 1200 points awarded for an error-free trip. Points are deducted for knocking down rails, refusals, falling off and not completing the course in the allotted time.
The athlete with the highest point total before the combined event starts the run first, followed by the remaining competitors whose start times are staggered based on points differential with the leader. During the race runners must stop every 1000 meters to shoot their pistol at 5 targets before continuing on. The first to cross the finish line is the winner.
Why You Should Watch
Each event has its own excitement, but the final combined event is athletics at its best. The athletes must control their breath and heart rate when firing their pistol, and strong shooters can gain valuable time. You can almost imagine the lead runner being chased by an enemy across the countryside as competitors try and catch up. The final few hundred meters of the race generally ends in a tightly contested all-out sprint to cross the finish line for the Gold medal.

The Pentathlon in the Ancient Olympics featured events similarly based on the skills an ideal soldier of the time would need: spear and discuss throwing, wrestling, jumping, and running.
