Swimming Lesson
I thought planning for a swimming lesson to etertain my guset was the brightest idea but it turned out to be not so fun. As swimming pools are for the rich, the middle class goes to the river to learn to swim.
Everything stood still and every matatu (mode of transport in Kenya) was full with people as they were heading to their villages. No business was running and the streets of the capital city Nairobi were empty. As I sat watching the 9pm news with my parents, I realized that this was the time the Easter family get together was in our house. At the age of ten, I was excited as I had gone to other family members homes during the Easter holiday and now it was time for them to come to our house. As I went to bed I could not sleep as I was filled with anticipation of the actual day.
The following day I woke up very early to help my mother prepare food for the visitors at 5am. My mother was busy preparing chapatti and my father and brother were busy preparing the goat that the visitors would enjoy, as a family get together without goat meat is not considered a get together. At 10am everything was ready and the visitors started streaming in one by one and by 1pm everybody was in the house ready to enjoy the food that we spent the whole morning preparing. As I anticipated, it was time to celebrate as Easter in Kenya is a time to be with family. As a child I did not care about the food as much as I cared about playing with the other children that I had not seen in a year.
As the host, I was to entertain the children as this was my house and I sure had fun games prepared so I thought. It's not an unusual for a ten year old in Kenya to take care of themselves and others. Therefore, I took the children to the river to teach them how to swim as this is how we learn to swim in Kenya. As fun as it was for us, the parents were busy looking for us and no one knew where we had gone. As we came back all wet, we had to explain where we were and whose idea it was to go to the river. I explained how fun it was and for sure it wasn't fun after that as my dad removed his belt and I was given a beating. For sure that is one Easter holiday I will leave to remember.
