Which Type of Automated Pool Cleaner is Best for Your Pool?

I wrote this article to help people make a wise and educated choice on an automated pool cleaner for their swimming pool. I have spent countless hours observing many different types of automated swimming pool cleaners in the real world environment.

Pressure Side Cleaner
There are two categories of automated pressure side cleaners boosted and non-boosted cleaners. My favorite is the booster pump models have a separate pump and motor from the swimming pool pump. They require a minimal amount of water from the pool pump, the low volume of water is sent to the cleaner pump and boosted to operate the pool cleaner. These in my opinion are the best cleaner for any swimming pool application, if you are building a pool I would highly recommend this type of cleaner. They are easy to operate, clean the pool the well and most can handle large amounts of debris with no affect on the swimming pool cleaning equipment. My favorite cleaner happens to be a Polaris 280, they have a large throat for leaves and debris. They have few moving parts that equals to shorter down times due to maintenance. The Polaris 280 cleans in diving and play pools well. There is only one cleaner that I believe is better than the 280 and it only out preforms it in a particular type of pool. The cleaner is a Letro Legend by Pentair, this cleaner does clean better than three wheeled cleaners in a square form factor pool. I don't really understand but every pool I have operated with a three vs a four wheeled cleaner that is square the Legend cleaned pool is always cleaner, the limitation is that the design of the pool is in a square form. Meaning the pool has 4 sides and corners, is not of a free from design.

The non-boosted pressure side cleaners operate off of your pool pump. They take a portion of the water that is returned to the swimming pool and direct it to the pool cleaner. These can work well but often have problems in a pool with water features that require the return water to operate, such as a spa spill over. The other down side to these type cleaners is that it robs your pool return water The lack of flow in the pool return jets and can begin to cause circulation problems, by not keeping the water turbid enough to prevent algae growth. I also have seen particular pool builders incorporate these type of cleaners, and they bypass the filter which is not a good idea in my opinion. You want all your water to pass through your filter during its turn over time not half of the water. It is can be an easy process in most swimming pools to convert to a boosted pressure side cleaner by changing out the cleaner head, re-plumbing, adding a booster pump and time clock.

Suction Cleaners
Suction cleaners operate on the principle of suction much like a vacuum. They require a dedicated line for suction or a skimmer outlet is used. If the pool is not built for it you can use an available skimmer but now you are loosing your surface skimming that helps keep things from falling in your pool in the first place. They are very good cleaners and can pick up very fine debris in a swimming pool, however you they don't do well when faced with leaves. Other pluses are cost , no separate pump to operate, no extra time clock , we can all relate to saving money with rising energy cost. The leaves that get sucked up go to a separate canister or to the pool pump basket and the fine debris is lodged in the filter and requires you to stay on top of your filter maintenance. The other down side is most tend to do well only in a pool with no deep end more of an even depth such as a play pool. I also don't like the fact that you are using the suction from the pool equipment to operate. You loose some of your skimmers ability to skim the top of the pool. My belief is the more you skim off the top of the pool the less you will have falling in your pool, that can be hard to achieve if your cleaner is taking up your skimmer.

Choices
There are choices to be made in a purchase of an automatic pool cleaner and if your building your pool its a good time to look at these options. If your pool is already built your options are limited to your pocket book for most people. I hope this article can help you with your decision in future purchases or basic operating knowledge.
