In Chicago, some of the best places for dogs to go swimming are dog beaches along Lake Michigan and dog-designated swimming pools through groups like Dock Dogs.
Lake Michigan Swimming Spots, It's a Dog's World
When the weather gets steamy, and the fur is flying, a good place for swimming in Chicago are its dog beaches. There are three choices in the immediate Chicagoland area--Montrose Beach, the only inner-city off-lease beach for dogs; Belmont Harbor, where dogs must be leashed and stay within the designated area; and Evanston Dog Beach, where dogs must be licensed to owners living in Evanston to enjoy frolicking freely on the beach.
Montrose Beach - Montrose Harbor, Lake Shore Drive, Chicago
Dogs here can enjoy being leash-free once on the beach. However, owners should be aware that dogs must be kept on a leash in the parking lot area. All dogs must have a Chicago Dog-Friendly Permit ($5 per season) and vaccinations. This is a great location for dogs to run, jump, and engage with other dogs as well as enjoy swimming in the cooling waters of Lake Michigan. Because of the large volume of dogs, children, and adults, dogs should be well trained to voice commands or be kept on a leash. Hours are usually from sunrise to 9:00 pm, or designated Chicago Park District hours. Mornings tend to see the most activity.
Belmont Harbor Dog Beach - Belmont Avenue, Chicago
This is a leash-only dog beach for the city's canines, despite the fact that you will notice some dogs off leash. However, getting caught off leash can result in a fine. There's a fenced-in area designated for dogs in this larger Belmont Harbor area. This is a new addition by the city and certainly not as popular as the free range Melrose Beach or Evanston.
Evanston Dog Beach - Church Street, Evanston
In addition to a current rabies vaccination and license, dogs who enjoy swimming at the Evanston Dog Beach must first obtain a token for the season ($88 currently). The dog beach is a wide sandy area north of the Church Street launch area, and dogs love running free on the beach here. The beach is open from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm daily, April through November, weather permitting.
Swimming in Pools, Jumping for Big Air
For those who are looking for a little more sport to their swimming, a great organization is Dock Dogs, which exists nationwide. In Chicago, the Chicagoland Dock Dogs group meets to practice in Bartlett, Illinois, with competitions held around the area. The main swimming activity with Dock Dogs involves dogs running off an established deck and jumping into swimming pools to retrieve dog toys or decoys. While owners challenge each other on big air, distance, and other jumping achievements, for the dogs, it's all fun and games.
Membership is a basic $35 fee annually, with practices running $5 per session. Competitions are reasonably priced, and the public (with dogs) are invited to come watch or take a few practice jumps before the serious competition starts. These events, which occur throughout the summer, are great family events.
