How to Relieve Swimmers Itch
Swimming in lake and swimming holes can cause parasites to burrow in your pores. What can be done to get rid of this problem?
Newly hatched parasite are usually near the surface of the lake and the greatest chance of infection is during the later part of the day, especially after strong inbound winds.
When the parasite make contact with your skin, they do not live long after they have given you the swimmers itch. but, their effects cause several days of irritation.
Swimmers Itch Symptoms.
Almost immediately after exiting the water, you will feel a tingling sensation on your skin.
You will notice small red spots, where the parasite entered your hair follicles.
A few hours later the tingling sensations subside, then disappear altogether.
That's the good news.
The bad news is -- the small red spots will get big and itchy like a mosquito bite. If you are allergic to stings and bites, the level of irritation will be more intense. The itching is harmless, albeit irritating and it usually last for only a few days.
This flatworm parasite will cause red welts that look like big pimples and then you will begin to itch like crazy within a few hours after you leave the infected lake.
For swimmers itch cure, it is best to try to avoid swimming in lakes and swimming holes, but if you insist, you should take precautions to avoid the irritating organism.
Swimmers Itch Prevention:
After you get out you should towel off vigorously to crush the worms before they have a chance to penetrate your skin.
As soon as possible, take a shower and make a thin paste of oatmeal and milk and rub it all over your skin to help with the itching. Rinse thoroughly.
If you are infected, apply an anti-itch ointment. Be prepared to itch for a long time, because the irritation can last anywhere from a couple of days to a couple of weeks.
If the irritation last for longer than two weeks, see your Dr. for treatment.
Some of the experts say that you can help to prevent the parasites from attaching to your skin if you apply a generous amount of waterproof sunscreen.
