How to Make Learning Colors Fun

Helpful tips to help parents find creative ways to help their child learn colors.

Start with the basics

Chances are that from the very beginning you've been describing items to your children using colorful adjectives. "Lets find your yellow blanket", or "You look pretty in your red dress." We say these things automatically. Around the ages of 3-5 years you can turn the tables. Start by giving your kids simple commands such as, "Find your blue shoes", or "Hand me the yellow towel." This turns the learning from descriptive to inquisitive. Using basic items around the house can be an easy way to break into a color lesson. Find toys in multiple colors such as small cars. Ask your child, "Which car is red?" This can be played with any group of toys, blocks, crayons, or balls. Use this same technique at meal time, and ask your child to name the colors on his plate. Serving vibrant fruits and vegetables not only makes for a healthy meal, but it can work a little color lesson into your dinnertime conversation.

Remember that everyday chores have teachable moments

Invite your children sort the laundry with you. Have them find all of the white socks. Make a pile of red clothes. Sort all of your clothes by color and then ask them which pile is bigger. Not only is it a quick color lesson, but you've just got a little help with the laundry.

Play games

Color games are easy to find. Everyone has played Twister at some point in their lives. Even if you don't own the game you can always pick one up cheaply at a thrift store. Little ones don't need to play by the rules. Call out a color and both of you hop on that color circle. Kids love to be physical and they love to play with their parents. It will squeeze in a little extra learning while giving them some play time with you. Another great game is Candy Land. This really works best for the 4-5 year olds, but some advanced threes like to play as well. Get creative and make your own games. The next time you find yourself at a home improvement center, swing by the paint samples. Take two of each of the colors red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, brown, black, and white. Take these cards and play "Memory". Put all of the cards face down and have your child look for matching cards. You can also use these same cards to play a color version of "Go Fish".

Make a day of it

My favorite option is to have a color day. Let's say today is red day. On red day, wake up in the morning and put on red clothes. Find something to eat with each meal that is red, such as strawberries, apples, or watermelon cubes. If you have it, use a red cup, plate, napkin, or placemat. Try to spy red everywhere you go that day, at the grocery, post office, or red cars while driving. Make crafts with red construction paper, draw with red crayons, paint with red paint, or anything else you can think of. After dinner, have a special dessert such as a couple of pieces of red candy, a red popsicle, or a piece of red licorice. The sweet treat really enforces the color lesson in their minds. At night say, "Thanks for celebrating red day with me." The following week pick a new color.

Last, but not least...

You've heard it before, but it bears repeating. Read to your children. No matter which book, you can always point out colors in the pictures. Children love to be read to, they love the sound of your voice, and they love all of your attention. You are your child's first teacher, and with a play and laughter your child will be ready for preschool and beyond.
