The Mental Skills You Need for Being Successful in the Triathlon
When running a triathlon, mental toughness is key. Focusing on what you want is one of the most important things you can do when running the triathlon. This may sound really easy but many people fail to realize
The absolute most important thing you can do when running the triathlon is believing in yourself. When trying to reach your goals in the triathlon, you will not always see the fruit of yours of your labor instantaneously. This can get discouraging at times. It can hinder your belief. Just know that you have set out on a carefully planned course. Hopefully you've written down what it is that you want to accomplish and it is clear within your mind. As long as this has been taken care of and you're taking constant action, you can pretty much guarantee yourself that you will accomplish whatever it is that you want. Think about when you're driving a car cross-country and it is dark outside. Your headlights only show about 20 feet ahead of you. You cannot see the end destination right away, but you know you're on the right course because you take a look at a map and you know that you will arrive at your destination in just a matter of time. It is the same with your training in the triathlon, right down your goals picture where you want to be and take action every single day.
You must set goals to achieve whatever you desire. When running the triathlon, take the goal of running faster and break it down into smaller actions. Every single action you take will either bring you closer to what you want or get you farther away. If you decide to train your legs, you get faster. If you decide to go out of town and get drunk and party with your friends, you move farther away for goal.
Self talk is also one of the key things to take care of when you want to get faster in the triathlon. Being aware of the small voice in your mind is very important because it can be your ally or your enemy. If you constantly say to yourself that you can't run faster or you hope you don't go to slow, then you're setting yourself up for failure. Your subconscious mind does not understand negatives. All that it can interpret is "I hope I go slow" and doesn't hear the "I don't want". Being aware of this can be the difference between a champion and a loser. It is up to you to manage your internal talk.
Keeping focus on the things that are in your power is also very key. Many times the clients I train come to me and worry about things are out of their power. What if it's raining that day? What if the track will be slippery? What if the water of is too cold? Focusing on these things that you have no power over is useless. It is much more useful to focus on training properly, resting enough, and focusing on the end result of you winning.
All of the things mentioned above are skills that can be learned. If you commit yourself to learning and applying them you are on a surefire route to success. Whatever you do, don't quit.
