Trayvon Martin -- an Uncomfortably Inconvenient Truth

Like it or not, this story has less to do with “justice” and more to do with skin color. Well, that and the determination of others to fuel the race fire so they can exploit the heat for personal reasons.

COMMENTARY | Trayvon Martin was a Florida high school student that few people outside of Miami Gardens had heard of until Feb. 26 -- after he was shot dead. The name of George Zimmerman, a Neighborhood Watch volunteer, was unknown outside of the gated community where he lived too -- until he killed Martin.

Martin, a 17-year-old African American, is dead. Zimmerman -- half white, half Hispanic -- hasn't been arrested. No doubt, this is a horrible tragedy. But like it or not, this story has less to do with "justice" and more to do with skin color.

Well, that and the determination of others to fuel the race fire so they can exploit the heat for personal reasons.

"Trayvon is martyr, he's not coming back," Daily Caller quoted Jesse Jackson, Sr. saying at a Sanford town hall on Sunday. "He's a martyr, murdered and martyred."

Ah, yes. Rev. Jackson. Whenever a racial spark is cast into the air you can bet he'll be there before it hits the ground to fan it to a fire.

The thing is, by definition, a "martyr" is "one who chooses to suffer death rather than renounce religious principles" or "makes great sacrifices or suffers much in order to further a belief, cause, or principle."

According to a police report obtained by the Orlando Sentinel -- and corroborated by several witnesses -- Martin was shot in the chest while on top of Zimmerman who was screaming for help as Martin repeatedly slammed his head against the sidewalk. When police arrived they found Zimmerman with a broken nose, a swollen lip and bloody wounds on the back of his head.

Then there's Al Sharpton, another opportunist who never lets a good race-baiting prospect go to waste. Of course, he's using his role as host of Politics Daily on MSNBC to manipulate this story in a way that Jackson can only envy.

"People who know what Trayvon was all about as a person all say they can't believe he attacked Zimmerman," Sharpton reported.

He even produced a "witness." She didn't actually see anything. But she heard someone crying. So, to hell with the statements of multiple eye-witnesses. And that pot evidence found in Martin's backpack? It's "not violent and not material to this."

Even former NAACP leader C.L. Bryant said Jackson and Sharpton are "race hustlers" exploiting the story to "racially divide this country," Daily Caller reported.

You won't hear either of them wondering why Martin was observed on a school surveillance camera "hiding and acting suspicious" in an unauthorized area scrawling "W.T.F" on a door.

They won't try to find out where Martin obtained the 12 pieces of women's jewelry including a watch, silver wedding bands and a pair of diamond earrings school police found in Martin's book bag either. Forget about them asking why Martin also had large flat-head screwdriver described in the Miami-Dade School's Police report as a "burglary tool."

Besides, Martin's family attorney Benjamin Crump already dismissed that story as "irrelevant" too.

"They killed my son," the Sentinel quoted Martin's mother, Sybrina Fulton saying, "and now they're trying to kill his reputation."

Now, while none can question the the sincerity of her grief, the story revealed by Smoking Gun sure raises at least one query.

By whose direction did the law firm representing Fulton file applications in her name with the United States Patent and Trademark Office - at a cost of $325 a pop -- for legal ownership of the phrases "I Am Trayvon" and "Justice for Trayvon," and secure all rights to all digital materials and any other products featuring the name "Trayvon Martin?"

Of course we can't forget the New Black Panthers. The report by All Voices about those "Wanted -- Dead or Alive" posters being distributed at Minister Mikhail Muhummud's press conference sure was interesting.

Amid demands for Zimmerman's arrest, the firing of Sanford Police Chief Bill Lee and for President Obama "to do the right thing," Muhummud said Zimmerman "should be afraid for his life" and that Martin "symbolizes" his "son."

After making protesters wait four days for a response, Obama threw them some bones. The Department of Justice launched an investigation and Obama said that if he had a son he'd "look like Trayvon."

Carefully scripted concern -- check.

Making another catastrophe about himself -- check.

There's also the bit on Wagist about Martin's Twitter account. He used the name "NO_LIMIT_NIGGA." Of course, that doesn't fit with the squeaky clean/poor black victim image Martin Milkers like Jackson, Sharpton, Muhummud and Crump want you to swallow. Neither does the Tweet about Martin taking a swing at a bus driver or the not so vague string of posts on his Facebook page that suggest Martin may have been a small-time drug dealer.

No word yet from Jackson, Sharpton, Muhummud or Obama regarding The Dispatch story about 21-year-old John Sanderson who was "shot to death at a Mississippi State University residence hall late Saturday night. That's probably because Sanderson was white and the three male suspects arrested in connection with his death are black.

Well, that and because Sanderson doesn't "symbolize" and didn't "look like" he could have been their hypothetical son.
