Get Radical; No Fooling!

Life coach Doreen Rainey has been helping women get radical with their lives, creating the first Get Radical conference four years ago. This year, the conference has expanded to three days with bonus take-home tools.

Four years ago, life coach Doreen Rainey decided to take the advice she was giving her clients and get radical herself, organizing the first Get Radical conference. The conference has now grown to a three-day event, and this year's Get Radical: Bold, Courageous, RADICAL! Conference is set to begin. Doreen took some time out of those last-minute preparations to talk about how the conference has changed yet still remains true to the goal of helping women make those radical changes in their lives that will help them grow and blossom.

Angela Thor: You must be excited; it's almost time for the conference to start.

Doreen Rainey: Yes, we are a week away, so, last minute details and we're looking forward to an incredible event.

AT: This is the fourth conference, so you're well beyond the sophomore slump. Is it still basically the same as the first year you did it?

DR: The feeling on the inside is the same, but it has definitely transformed. This is our first year that we have moved to multiple days and added break-out sessions. So it's almost like year one again. I have those same feelings because we're doing things a little bit differently this year. It's exciting to have many people coming back, who have been with us all three years, and that we have an international presence coming from Australia and the UK, Canada, so that's very exciting. So I still feel all the same things as year one.

AT: So you kept the original core the same but have changed it enough to keep people coming back.

DR: Yes, we have, we always make sure that we have a right-now conference so that it never gets that stale feeling. What I mean by that is, all of the speakers we bring in, they're not what I call podium PowerPoint speakers where they'll submit their presentation months in advance, because a lot can happen in a couple of months. So I think what keeps people coming back is they know it's fresh information, it's for the time that we're in now. What we're talking about this year still has some semblance of what was going on last year, but looking at what people are dealing with right now, it's helping them advance in their career, get their finances together, and overcome fear and lack of confidence. So, each year, we make sure we have our finger on the pulse of about what people want to learn about.

AT: I think the fear factor would be really big this time around.

DR: Yes, yes, yes, it is, and then we compound that with what I call a sense of urgency. I think after, with the recession and all the changes people have been dealing with, people are really going back to "What do I want my life to be? How do I find fulfillment? How do I make sure that I'm always happy and satisfied regardless of recession or how we market?" I think people are really getting back to those kinds of questions, and they feel a sense of urgency about it, but then they either don't know how to go about it or are too afraid to do it, so we really want to help people with that.

AT: Now that your conference is well established, is it easier to get speakers or has it always been relatively easy?

DR: I always say it can't hurt to ask and it can't hurt to be the negotiator. What happens, I think, is the speakers that come believe in this event and so, talking with Jillian [Michaels] or talking with Suze [Orman], it wasn't a matter of "Are you available? Let's negotiate!" it was a matter of "Is this the type of event I want to be a part of, be associated with?" And so being able to establish this kind of platform where women of this caliber really understand what I'm trying to do and want to be a part of it is very exciting. They've come on board excited and ready to roll.

AT: Early conferences you said your demographics were "from 17 to 70." Do you still get the same age group participating?

DR: We probably have crunched that in a little bit. We're probably more with people in their late twenties, early thirties into their fifties. And I think part of that, especially for this year, number one is the change in format and number two was the break-out sessions are much more targeted to women in terms of what they're dealing with right now. So there's an entrepreneur track and also a life-coaching track. So people who are looking to start businesses or who have a business and are looking towards how to grow it typically fall within that age range and we're seeing more and more of them.

AT: Do you need to come for the full three days or are there one-day options?

DR: They need to come for the full event. I call it an experience and one of the things that, well there are a couple of things that separate us from other conferences, but I call it a production. So we have opening ceremonies, we have closing ceremonies, we have all of these things that really make for a totally arc of an experience for those who attend.

AT: And you have that nice option of bringing a friend for free, which is great in these economic times.

DR: Absolutely, bringing a friend for free; we offer payment options and payment plans, because we do understand that people need this information and they need to have access to the tools and strategies that our speakers give, so we also want to make it as easy as possible. That's why we do the bring-a-friend; you can split some of those costs and also do the payment plan.

AT: Often those at the lower end of the economic spectrum need these events the most.

DR: And it's interesting because I think that's true and I also think it's true that there are a lot of people who are wondering "Is this it? What's next?" They have reached some level of success in their career. They may be looking at children who are now teenagers and are going to be leaving soon, and it's kind of like "What is my next move?" A lot of times people come with that question. "I'm just looking for a spark, looking for something to give me some direction." Those are the type who attend as well.

AT: So after the three-day conference, what next?

DR: I know that people come to these events and they get really, really excited, motivated and fired up, and they get all their notes and they set their goals and their action plan and then they go home. So what I want to do is make sure that nothing gets lost in translation. So I have the Radical Success Institute, which is a resource center where I do my coaching and training and curriculum, and there are different tiers in the Institute. But everyone who registers for the conference gets a year's membership in the premier. What that means is over the next twelve months, they'll be plugged in to that same feeling, those same vibes and information and community that they were at the conference. So I do monthly teleclasses, monthly Q A; calls so people can ask me questions about their challenges or share their successes. There are some online tools that people can use as well, and it just makes you stay focused because you get back and there's the job and the family and the doubt and the fear and all that stuff creeping back in. We want to make sure we give you something to plug you back in consistently so that you can keep moving forward. So I'll be spending my time in the Institute so I can help people do that.

AT: So you make a lot of use of the social media out there.

DR: The social media, Facebook and Twitter, and the Institute itself is an actual portal that people can log in to get their information with videos, access to articles and we also do have a community on Facebook for those members as well so they can stay connected.

AT: Do a lot of attendees make use of this membership?

DR: We have, last year, the Institute was the mastermind of people in my coaching program. This year, we really opened it up into these tiers, and one of the things that we started, we have what I call Monday Night Live. Every Monday, I talk with one of the break-out speakers so that they can share information and get people excited about coming and those calls are available for download through the Institute. So we're seeing people wanting to get that information, wanting to listen to the call and they're taking advantage of that. Our goal is to share with them enough of the successes people are having as well as what resources are in there that you can't get anywhere else and just keep them excited and help them maximize the Institute. I don't want them to feel that it's a lot of time and it's taking over, but we do want them to know that these resources are available to them.

AT: I know all the speakers are good but is there anyone you're really excited about this year?

DR: Well, Jillian is always great to comeback, and Suze, I'm just excited about her no-nonsense approach to what it takes to really get it together. And all of these speakers have this tough love kind of positioning. We compassionately nudge you, compassionately make you take responsibility for your actions and I think Suze, talking about money and everyone's concerned about the economy, can really help people see what their priorities should be and what they need to do to actually make it happen.
