NASA Johnson Space Center, Houston TX
This is a nice place to take kids to and spend a hot summer day, or a rainy day with family.
The universe and space has always held great fascination for mankind. From ancient times humans have always tried to unlock the mysteries of this great unknown by studying the stars and planets. For us in the modern times the Houston space center has helped us understand more about the universe we live in, about the earth and the moon and the solar system of which we are a part of.
The History
The Houston space center, named in the honor of late president, Lyndon Johnson, and established in 1961, has been used as a training base for astronauts, a design and development center for manned space flights, and control center for the space flights for last 30 years. It has played an extremely important role in United States success in the Space Race. "Houston, the eagle has landed", with these words, Houston became the first word spoken from the surface of the moon. And that small step for humans but a giant leap for mankind, made Houston space center from where the Apollo missions to moon were handled, became paramount in the history of world's space exploration
Our Visit
When we decided to visit Houston, visiting the space center was unanimous choice from our to do list. Since watching the movie Apollo 13, and reading about the important role that the space center has played in all those missions, our family had been looking forward to visit the Johnson space center for many days. We knew that it is the same center from where the Gemini, Apollo and Skylab flights were controlled, and we couldn't wait to take a first hand look at the mission control room, the rockets and as they advertised on their site, take a look at real astronauts in training. Our boys were very excited and so were we grown ups. When we got there it was not very crowded as it was a weekday, so got our tickets right away which are about $19 for adults and $15 for kids. If you live in and around Houston you can always take a membership which costs few bucks more but certainly is worth it.
The Blast off theater
Our first stop was blast off theater. It was a small theater where we stood and the screen came alive as the rockets got ready to take off. The boosters boomed and it felt like we were launched into space. The billowing exhaust from the rocket was simulated by the blasts of smoke from vents near the floor; my 3 year old was amazed. After the movies we learned about the current missions to space center, and also about the mission to mars. The mission status center took us closer to what real mission control looks like and how it works. There was a Mission briefing officer to provide more information about the current space programs and the training for the astronauts. The kids had a real blast there.
The Astronaut Gallery and the Feel of Space
We got to see the real space suits worn by real astronauts on the space missions. We looked at the pictures of many astronauts, and other crew members for many missions. If you want to experience how it's like to live in space, visit the feel of space center. The tiny shower and bathroom replica from space station were really funny. It's amazing the astronauts live in those confined places form days and weeks to study. A briefing officer explained how doing all these daily tasks becomes more difficult because of the lack of gravity in space.
The star ship Gallery
At first we were shown a movie about the history of space missions, and then how we started sending human beings to space. Here we saw the actual space crafts, like the Gemini V and the Mercury Atlas 9,The faith capsule, The Apollo 17 command module and the Lunar roving trainer. There are lots of other artifacts on display that are used during some of these missions.
The tram Tour
This was the part where we got to see the actual work that goes on behind the scenes. They say that this tour keeps changing every few days, but we were lucky enough to be able to visit the current mission control center. The rocket park which sounded really cool had 2 humongous rockets on display. Although we really hoped to see the real astronauts in training, and the Neutral Buoyancy Lab we but didn't get to, which really disappointed the kids.
The Space center Theater
Here we watched a film about how the astronauts are selected and trained. Boy,it is lot harder than what we thought. The views from the space were really breathtaking from this 5 story screen.
The Kids Space Place
We saved the best for the last. We were warned by some our friend not to visit this place unless we are sure that we have seen everything that we wanted to. So after a quick break for snacks at the Zero G diner, we went to the ultimate playground for the kids, the Kids space, and we are glad that we went there last. It was so hard to get the kids out of there.
The huge Jungle Jim, the slides, make believe command centers, and interactive exhibits leave lots of opportunities for imaginative play and physical activity.
The level 9 tour
This was the tour that we really wanted to take but couldn't. On this tour people really get to see where and how the Astronauts are trained and the real mission control center. The tickets are available by advance reservation, and are only available for 12 people age 14 and up each day. The tour guide who is very professional and knowledgeable will take you through 5 buildings in the space center complex, including the Space environment simulation lab or the Vacuum chamber. The tour takes on average about 5 hrs and includes lunch at the Astronauts Cafe, so plan accordingly.
We all really enjoyed our visit to the space center, had lot of fun and learned loads about the space exploration that we didn't know before. Along with all the amazingly informative, educative and entertaining displays, the most memorable thing that we all will always remember is their motto, "Failure is not an option." It inspires us and tells us the importance of perseverance and determination, with which we can achieve whatever we set our minds to, and reach where no one else has reached before.
