Tackling that Open-Water Swim During a Triathlon

Don't let the open-water swim be the event that holds you back in your triathlon training. The right preparation and the right attitude can get the job done.

But first, you need the right equipment. That means a reliable pair of goggles, a swim cap and if the water is expected to be cold on the day of your triathlon, a wet suit. If the water is expected to be warm, a decent one piece suit (if you're female) and a pair of form-fitting, race-style trunks if you're male. Talk to the sales clerk at your local athletics store for advice and fitting tips. One thing to remember is that you want everything to fit snug to your body. Trunks and suits should be tight so as not to create drag in the water, and goggles should be tightly suctioned to your face so as to prevent water leakage. The last thing you want is to be unable to see underwater on your big day, so make sure those goggles fit correctly.

Once you have all this equipment you are ready to start practicing. And for most of us, that means getting in the pool. Unfortunately, the pool is almost like a baby sitter when it comes to training for open-water swim events, but at least it helps you work on your technique while building your speed and endurance. Once you feel 110% comfortable swimming at least one mile in the pool, then you are ready for the open-water. If you have the luxury of living near an ocean or lake, or better yet, the open water source where you plan to do your triathlon, then start practicing there. It will help get your body acclimated to the currents and vastness of the water, and will give you a little of what to expect on race day. Unfortunately, for most first-time triathletes, that luxury does not exist. For most, that first open-water swim is on race day. And that's where the mental fitness comes into play.

Once you step foot in that ocean you become abundantly aware that there are no lane markers, there are no lane ropes, and there is no wall to signify that you have reached your destination, turn around and do it again. No, the open water is much trickier than that. It is vast, it is open, and your first instinct might be to hightail it out of there. But stay calm. Believe it or not, there are plenty other swimmers in your same situation. Just relax, take a deep breath and recall all those hours of practice that led you to this moment.

Before the race begins, you will want to position yourself away from the main group of swimmers because this will help you avoid getting kicked in the face or anywhere else for that matter. Since this is your first triathlon, you should be competing for the sake of finishing; not trying to set world records, so starting at the back of the pack is okay. If the water is murky, you will want to lift your head occasionally to ensure that you are swimming in the correct direction. Don't be tempted to catch the swimmers ahead of you, just see that they are there and keep going. Most triathlons involve swimming out to a buoy (with a lifeguard standing notice) and back to shore. Just keep your eye on the buoy, turn around and keep going. Once you reach the beach, you can say a silent yippee and keep trudging toward the transition area. Remember, the bike and run are next! But at least the hard part is over.
