Buyer's Guide to Waterproof (Underwater) Cameras
Introduction to underwater cameras, as well as two photo samples and details on various features to look for.
Price: Underwater cameras can range from $10 to hundreds of dollars depending upon their format and features. Disposible underwater cameras are available for slightly less than basic underwater cameras.
Format: Waterproof cameras using almost every photography format have been manufactured, including digital, Advanced Photo System (APS), 110mm, and 35mm. As with non-waterproof cameras, digital and APS cameras are generally more expensive. Underwater APS cameras are not very common and are mostly made by Canon. 110mm waterproof cameras have been produced by Hanimex, Konica, and Minolta. The Minolta Weathermatic is one of the more common film-based underwater cameras and is available in both 110mm and 35mm formats. Other common 35mm waterproof cameras include the Vivitar Mariner and Hanimex Amphibian. Smaller brands such as Cobra, Tura, Jazz, and Suprema have also manufactured underwater cameras.
Flash: Most of the cheaper (under $15) underwater cameras have no built-in flash, and it is not possible to connect a flash unit to them. However, most underwater cameras priced at over $15 have a built-in flash, and a few expensive cameras have large external flash units designed to be used underwater. One flash unit of this type is the Sea amp; Sea YS-40, which connects to the side of the same brand's MX-10 camera and has a similar appearance to the large handle-mount flash units used with some non-waterproof 35mm cameras.
Other Features: Many of the other features commonly included with film-based cameras (aperture/f-stop settings, motorization, etc.) are rarely found on underwater cameras and usually increase the price substantially if they are included. Some Nikonos and Sea amp; Sea underwater camera models do have these features.
It is worth mentioning that some underwater cameras have controls which cannot be manipulated without removing the clear waterproof casing. For example, the Tura waterproof camera has a switch for opening and closing the lens cover, as well asturning the flash on and off. This switch cannot be moved when the casing is on, so you have to decide whether to use the flash or not before going into the water. The casing also has to be removed for film rewinding, loading, and unloading. The casing allows the film advance and shutter button to be used while it is installed. Fortunately, the casing on this particular camera is easy to install and remove.
An alternative to buying an underwater camera is to buy a waterproof housing for a camera you already own. One brand which sells such housings is Aquatica. It has manufactured them for the Nikon D100, D200, F4, F90, and other models. Waterproof
housings are also available for the Olympus C-5060, Canon SD550, and some Sony digital cameras.

Overall, underwater cameras provide an interesting and different type of photography while still using the same processing formats as other cameras. The most basic underwater cameras are easy-to-use and not substantially more expensive than standard 35mm cameras with the same features, so this type of photography is certainly worth a try.
