My Top 10 Tips for Preparing Outdoor Swimming Pools for Summer

Follow these easy 10 steps and your pool will be operational.

Preparing outdoor swimming pools for summer - Tip #1
Remove the cover. Depending on the size of your pool this may require someone to assist you. You want to clean off leaves and debris from the top of the cover before you start. You do not want that mess on top wind up in the water.

Preparing outdoor swimming pools for summer - Tip #2
Now that the cover is off, give it a good cleaning with the garden hose. Let it dry and then fold it as neatly as possible for storage. Check it for damage. If it appears that it will not make it through another winter you will have lots of time to find a new one on sale.

Preparing outdoor swimming pools for summer - Tip #3
Walk around your pool and do a visual survey. Does the liner look ok? Did the water level drop lower than usual, which may indicate a possible leak? When you feel that you have checked it out as much as you can without going in the pool its time to move to the next step.

Preparing outdoor swimming pools for summer - Tip #4
For an in ground pool your next step is to put your hand rails back in place. If you have a safety rope you should hook that up now.

For an above ground pool hose off your steps and put them in the pool.

Preparing outdoor swimming pools for summer - Tip #5
Now it is time to turn on the filer and make sure it runs. Adding water to a pool changes the chemical balance. You should fill your pool to the required level before you take a water sample.

Preparing outdoor swimming pools for summer - Tip #6
This step is very important as the results will serve as guidelines for the season - take a water sample to the pool store. They do not charge for this service. You will receive a printout stating the levels of: alkalinity, pH, water hardness and chlorine.

Preparing outdoor swimming pools for summer - Tip #7
The pool store associate will then use the results from the testing to make recommendations as to what you need to add to the pool to bring it up to acceptable levels. Once you know what chemicals you need you can purchase them while you are there.

Preparing outdoor swimming pools for summer - Tip #8
Get out the printout from the pool store, follow the recommendations, add your chemicals and then use your home testing kit to check the levels. Buy yourself a good 5-way test kit so that you can check the levels yourself.

Preparing outdoor swimming pools for summer - Tip #9
Algae is a problem that will develop fast. You want to nip that problem in the bud before it even starts. We use a three month algaecide. We put it in the day we open the pool and again three months later and that covers our season. If you are in the North or colder areas you may only keep your pool open for three months so one bottle will be enough. There are many brands of 3 month algaecide choose the one you feel comfortable with. Do not waste your money on 30 day algaecide.

Preparing outdoor swimming pools for summer - Tip #10
Next you need to give the pool a thorough vacuuming. Once that is finished and you have your pool chemically balanced and the water is warm enough - its pool time. If you have kids you need to remind them of your pool safety rules. Now lather on the sunscreen, grab the hat and head for the pool.

If you follow the above steps for preparing outdoor pools for summer you will be on your way to enjoying your pool season. Remember to check your chlorine levels daily and make adjustments as necessary. Very shortly my husband and I will be following the above steps to open our pool. We have been doing this together for 13 years at 4 different homes, 4 different pools. You are on the road to a fun time in your swimming pool - enjoy the pool and be safe!
