My Top 3 Exercises that Built My Confidence in Writing

Some writers and aspiring author's loose their confidence along the writing journey. Here are 3 writing activities that will boost your confidence and get you started in successfully writing something worth sharing.


The mindset originally was "who would read this!?" But, over time, my mindset began to change because of the 3 following activities:


1. Freestyle Writing. This is the type of writing that allows you to dump anything and everything in your mind and heart onto paper, a journal, a notepad or your laptop or mobile device.

Freestyle writing allows you to explore thoughts and ideas that have hit you and that are hitting you at that present time. You can do this as long as you want and on a daily basis.

I do this from time to time by journaling. For me, journaling not only relieves my stress but also allows me to exercise creative thoughts and ideas and I can quickly place them onto paper so I will not forget them. It will be up to me if I choose to use the thoughts or ideas in a later work or just keep them for my personal reasons.


2. Brainstorming. Nothing like a good brainstorm when you're planning and putting together a writing project. Spend time thinking your idea through. Really consider the storyline, the characters and the setting. The more you give thought to your idea the larger it can become.

The challenge for some is that brainstorming creates a super-storm of thought, so much so that it requires a whole lot of information dumping, journaling and writing it all down. But, once you have done so, you'll be highly grateful.

I can't even count the many days I daydreamed and thought through my story arcs and character responses and the worlds in which my characters in my book(s) live in.


3. Talk Up Your Project. In this particular step, I would be exceptionally careful. Their might be times when you share your idea and others totally dislike it!

You have to be confident and comfortable enough to be able to say, "you know what, I'll value this persons' opinion because I've known them for a very long time and they are non-bias and or even professionals.

But worry not, not everyone is out to tear you or your ideas for writing apart. In fact, talking up your project is not only helpful for you but also can be helpful for others as well, if not encouraging and inspiring.

When I "talked up," or shared what I was doing, it inspired others to get into writing with me. There's something about hearing someone say "I'm a writer / author and I'm working on...." that makes something in you click and say "man, I need to get on my book."

Share what you're up too on your social media. Meet with your friends and family face to face and let them know what you're up too in the literary world. You'll be surprised how many supporters and encouragers you'll get around you as you work to complete your epic book!
