Several Cases of Schistosomiasis Reported in Tanzania
Travelers in Tanzania who were swimming in a freshwater pond report cases of schistosomiasis.
Schistosomiasis also known as bilharzia is a parasitic disease that is cause by several different species of flatworm. One form of schistosomiasis is also known as "snail fever" or "swimmer's itch". Many people who get infected by the schistosomiasis infection can have symptoms between 2-12 weeks after exposure to the water in which it was in. Many times, those infected have no symptoms at all, however the symptoms that can occur are fever, loss of appetite, weight loss, pain in the abdomen, bloody urine, muscle pain, joint pain, nausea, persistent cough, and diarrhea.
Unfortunately there is no vaccinations or medications for those who come in contact with the schistosomiasis infection. When diagnosed, a microscopic examination of the stool or urine to see if schistosome eggs are present. Although not always detectable, if any are found it is usually within 6 to 8 weeks after exposure.
The Centers for Disease Control has put up precautionary measures for those who would be traveling in the area where the disease is present. To prevent being infected travelers should stay out of untreated water such as canals, lakes, rivers, streams and even spring water. Many times in different countries water is often piped in from those canals, lakes, rivers, etc., so be sure to heat your water up and strain it with a mesh filter before using. If by any chance you cannot filter the water, let water stand for at least 2 days since the parasite does not stay infective for more than 24 hours.
Travelers should also be advised that once returning to the United States should be seen by a physician if they are having any symptoms listed above or if they know they have been in contact with water that had been contaminated. Be sure you explain to your physician exactly where you were swimming at ,that way if needed they can contact the proper authorities to allow them to take the precautions needed.
Although this infection is known in the subtropics and tropics and affects more than 200 million people, if you take the proper precautions obtaining the infection is minimal.
