Swim in the San Francisco Bay to Get in Shape Fast
Bay Waves and Currents Pose Challenge to Swimmers
You have got to be kidding, or else totally insane. Nobody with any sense whatsoever would voluntarily swim in the waters of San Francisco Bay unless they were off their rocker.
Everybody knows that hardened criminals were imprisoned on Alcatraz Island and forced to take hot showers so they would never even think about planning to escape by swimming. The very thought of the freezing, turbulent waters kept many crooks quite comfy in their warm prison cells.
Alas, times have changed. Swimming in the San Francisco Bay is now something people do at any hour of the day. It's an every-day occurrence in these modern times.
In fact, one San Francisco local named Jeff Gunderson swims in the bay in the mornings or evenings and sometimes during his lunch break, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. It must be a challenge for him every time he gets in the water.
Swimming is well known for being one of the best forms of exercise and one that offers the least amount of resistance to the muscles and ligaments in the body. It can also reduce obesity in the future and provide other benefits, according to The Shuttle. Student athletes love swimming and water polo because of how much fun it is and how they get to work as a team in order to win.
It is best to swim in pools or shallow waters and not in the San Francisco Bay. Swimming in the bay should be left for the professional tri-athletes who do it every year as part of the Escape from Alzatraz Triathlon.
Safety at all Times
Remember that swimming in any water is dangerous, especially water like the San Francisco Bay which has very strong currents that can pull you under in a heartbeat. Do not ever attempt to swim in the bay unless you are an experienced swimmer in excellent shape.
Drowning is one of the leading causes of accidental deaths, according to Coloradoan.com, and swimmers should always avoid being too tired or being too far from safety or help.
Michael Phelps makes swimming look easy and simple but always remember that he puts in thousands of hours of practice each year in very controlled environments. There is only one Michael Phelps and you are not him, so be extra careful in any water environment.
Leave swimming in the bay to others and stick to the shallow end of pool. Have fun this summer and swim safe.
